A 'Trying to Quit' smoker can best be described as a person who 'wants you to believe' there is hope. Yes, I've been reading (womens) profiles today and it's amazing to see how many people are 'trying to quit'.
In the past year, I've read a few hundred profiles and I can say with certainly other countries smoke less than Americans. The lowest I found was Chinese. Only 2 Chinese women (one from Hong Kong and one from Shanghai) were smokers... that's a really low percentage, maybe 0.5%. I would guess the American women on MD who smoke are closer to 40%.
Smokers... They are aware of all the health risks, the odor, the expense... however, they cannot do it. It's truly an addiction. Whether mental, physical or chemical... Patches, Nicorette gum and subliminal tapes are just a waste of time.
Last month, I lost a friend who died from Lung Cancer... I don't want to loose more friends from cancer. "Trying to quit" is nothing... "Quitting" is something.
Do Something. . . Thank you for reading my blog ! . .

Your thoughts and opinions on this subject really matter, thanks for posting them.
To smoke or not to smoke, to quit or more correctly put, to stop smoking, is a subject worth ragging on indifinitely. There are no positive benefits from smoking, but sadly, once the addiction has you....it's a fight with the devil himself.
Some can stop and never start again, others don't have whatever it takes ... even when facing the adverse effects of it. It is as much mental and spiritual as it is a physical dependence. Bummer all the way around. I have a GF who says, "I got to have them." No...one just 'thinks' they 'got to' have them. Although is a proven fact that we all are aware of, there are chemicals in tobacco that program our brains...that first week or two of stopping is deprogramming the brain.
To be correct, you are right about how others post it on their profile...if one is trying to quit, one is still technically smoking.

One of the things that prevents me from smoking again is I NEVER EVER WANT TO GO THRU THE QUITTING PROCESS AGAIN!
30 yrs of smoking............And nothing but cold turkey worked.......But If I can do it, ANYBODY CAN!
*I reserve the right to light up a cig, a joint and pop a beer when I am on my deathbed*

At least the "trying to quit" people admit smoking is a negative thing and as Angel and Meems (congrats to you both) proved, it CAN be given up. When checking out profiles, "nonsmoker" is one of the first and most crucial aspects I seek. When I was an undergraduate in college, I once made the mistake of dating a (very respectful) smoker. NEVER again though !
More importantly, no one can possibly argue that smoking is good for your health. This isn't the 1700's. Intelligent people recognize the tremendous amount of research linking smoking to severe health problems, while the severely addicted people rationalize. Having lost several friends and relatives to early deaths linked to smoking, it truly saddens me to see these people likley headed towards a very painful & early demise. While some may argue, that it's just a Darwinian elimination of the unfit, that doesn't make the loss of these people and their diseases any less painful.
