I have been reading an interesting book called Mermaid Magic by Amy Sophie Marashinsky. I have paraphrased, as much as I could in my own words, an excerpt of her book here as I found it fascinating reading and food for thought.
I'm really not one for women's liberation, in fact I would go so far as to say that movement hasn't particularly contributed well to male/female relationships. Men have their role, women have theirs, it's ridiculous to imagine we could be entirely equal - just maybe considered equal as human beings. I really do feel though, that (not without exception) women these days get the rough end of the deal. Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Of course I'm only going by personal experience and good luck to all you ladies out there who have cracked the relationship malarky, I'm still struggling with it. I've often wondered where it all went wrong and reading the above book made me wonder if perhaps there's some truth in it. The saying "behind every good man is a good woman" doesn't come out of nowhere and it wouldn't surprise me if I got the saying wrong - the word "great" is probably there somewhere. I wonder if mankind saw womankind as so amazing they forgot to look at themselves and see just how amazing they were too! Instead of debating it they oppressed that what they feared. I love men, adore everything about them that isn't feminine, surely that's the point of us both being on this earth. Women need their power back, their right to be sensual, feminine, creative beings, there to complement the masculine population not emasculate them. No wonder mermaids are such sad symbols, their femininity and sexuality is clearly something that was frowned upon and held up as a symbol of shame. Isn't it about time these archaic notions were laid to rest!!!
It is written that from the dawn of time our ancestors worshipped the Goddess. She took many different forms and names and was the personification of the Feminine Divine. She created the world and gave birth to the gods. She was Everything for everything was Her. In the civilisation of the Goddess artistic expression was essential and male/female relationships were sexy and fun.
Goddess represented fertility, sexuality, sensuality, power, wisdom, sovereignty, abundance and creativity. In her matrilineal society women were landowners, judges, priestesses, artisans and politicians. They ran businesses, raised children and ruled countries as well as men. In Northern Babylonia Eve was known as "The Divine Lady of Eden" or "Goddess of The Tree of Life".
In time Goddess gave birth to a son, a consort who eventually took over power. He made massive changes and transformed civilisation from matrilineal to patrilineal. HIStory is always written by those who are the victors - Goddess was demoted to Wife and women lost their power.
Civilisation became less focussed on artistic expression and more intent on war and weapons. Due to fear of the power of the feminine, Sex - previously seen as an ecstatic union, a gift of the Goddess was now seen as shameful, sinful and base. In line with this the Old Testament of the Bible reduced Goddess Eve to a rib and made her responsible for death and humanity's expulsion from the garden of Eden. The Bible and early Christian theologians went on to characterise women as evil. Women and children no longer had rights and were no more than the property of man.
However, Goddess survived the destruction of her civilisation. She found expression in the cult of the Virgin Mary. The name Mary is derived from the word Mari, meaning the Sea Goddess. From here on, all Goddesses feared aspects were attributed to mermaids. They became known as sirens of the sea, seducers of men. Those wondrous feminine qualities of the Goddess - the power, spirituality, sexuality, sensuousness, creativity, fertility and wisdom became encompassed in the now mythical figure of the mermaid.

Angel has spoken.......apparently the mermaid was the original symbol for Pisces.......I've always pictured myself as a mermaid.... thanks for listening

Eve was Adam's second wife, created to be inferior to him. He just could not cope with the first wife.
His first mate, Lilleth, would not allow him to rule her, would not lie below him, and left him when he tried to be superior to her.. She has been dropped from scripture, but lives on in unedited texts.
The earliest Gods were female because they could do the ultimate femine trick, that is, create life. Can it be that as modern women shun maternity their their Godess-like magic disappears, and they are mere humans, fallen to equality with men?

I think mankind lost a lot when we suppressed the power of women. But it has always been there and we've always been envious of the power women have to perform the ultimate act of creation- childbearing. That's why we hire scientists to figure out cloning and in vitro fertilization. In primitive times, woman was not only the bearer of children but the keeper of the fire, and they had power over turning the dead animals we'd killed into dinner. Women knew the plants and herbs and how to make a dead deer taste good.
Nowadays, we're all mixed up, but it's about damn time women had equality in the political arena. I am ashamed we didn't give women the right to vote until 1920 (here in the U.S.), we should have done that with our first constitution in 1776!
I, personally have always functioned better with a woman in my life. I can survive without, but to truly live to the fullest, I need a woman's energy and love and that wonderful thing you do to make a house a home. Thank you for the wonderful blog and for being a beautiful, intelligent female! I'm glad you exist!
