If you aren’t willing to hear/read reality then read no further. This blog is derived from personal experiences during my years as an animal cruelty investigator. While the biggest job I did was educating there were still some out there who just didn’t get it.
Animal cruelty conjures up the most horrendous pictures of abuse in many peoples minds. The cattle whose ribs one can count from half way across the field, the horse who walks funny because his shoes have been left to nature rather than the ferrier, the ram with the poorly healed axe wound in it’s head, fighting dogs, puppy mills and all the rest that make headlines. While I have encountered every one of these situations and many more that would make even a cast iron stomach revolt it is the lesser noticeable ones that I want to discuss.
Non-releasing cat collars which lead to cats hanging themselves indoors and out. Collars put on puppies and kittens and not checked frequently as the baby grows so the collar grows into the skin….this is the neck people….constriction of this area affects breathing. Choke collars (regular and spiked ones) left on dogs 24/7…..they hang themselves if they get hung up and it is a slow and painful death. Choke collars are only to be used during training by someone who knows how to use them properly. Dogs riding unsecured in the back of a pick up truck….if they fall or jump out they run the risk of getting run over by their own vehicle, another close behind, breaking bones, massive internal injuries….etc Tying a dog up and never allowing it to be part of the family…..not only does this drive a dog mad but it will quickly turn vicious in the process. Allowing a long haired animal to go ungroomed leading to severe matting of the hair…this is painful and cruel. Farm animals that do not have adequate shelter from the elements or are turned out into fields that have already been overgrazed. Declawing a cat and then allowing it to roam outside…..you have just removed it’s first line of defense. Not seeking help for your pet when it is obviously sick or injured….sorry, but if you can’t afford the emergency expenses that do crop up or do not have the resources to help you out maybe now is not the time to have one. There are many agencies out there that will help with the cost of spay/neuter and emergency treatment…..know who they are before you need them.
And the list goes on.....
SPAY AND NEUTER…..IT’S THE KINDEST CUT OF ALL

Buying bunnies at Easter because they're so cute...then dumping them outdoors a few months later, because they're growing, or chewing, or...
(advocate of the "Make Mine Chocolate" campaign...because "Easter's no fun, for a real bun")

Speaking from experience of working at as vet assistant for many many years, I've seen just about everything you've mentioned and more. It's sad for sure, and the worse part is these people hardly ever get punished and are able to get more animals even tho deaths occur. Wish the laws were tougher but, people just don't have feelings for animals it seems.

I don't know about their animal cruelty laws. I'm almost sure the dogfighting is illegal. There is a good movie about it called "Amores Perros".
As to cock fighting you should read this article: http://www.mexconnect.com/MEX/jrose/jjrcockfight.html
Animal cruelty takes on all forms depending on many things. They eat horsemeat in France and have done so for many years. They eat dogs in many parts of the world. Killing animals is not pretty no matter how hungry you may be.
If you'd work at slaughter house for a day you'd probably become a vegetarian overnight.
There is much more to the story than what most people tend to think. In otherwords, the situation is more complicated and not as simple as many would believe.

I agree one hundred percent! exellent blog!
I wish they would ban bull fighting.
Here in Portugal they praise themselves that they dont kill the bull. No they dont.. but they are speared repeatedly in the shoulder muscles so the bull cannot run any more.
Its a barbaric and sick sport that should be in history along with bear bating.

Yea, it's quite evident that men kill other men over oil. I think war should be banned too. Can it be equated to just the nature of the beast like bullfighting and cock fighting? If we can't stop killing each other, I doubt the animals have a chance.

I wish everyone who cares would get HANDS ON involved. To save one is better than none.
I think everyone should be forced to watch the videos. Then 1/2 of those people should be forced to visit a site first hand. Their lives will never be the same and more people just might actually get involved.
To those who hate animals? That's their choice and I can respect this. To hurt one for sport or through neglect is sick and unforgiveable!!!!
The $1000.00 fine ( in U.S.A.) is a joke especially when it is often reduced to an affordable price. The jail time is waved and probation is also a joke.
Look up animal abuse in your area and find out how you can help. You're on line anyway.....................

Having ran a ranch with all kinds of critters, I think it's good to mention that there is a Lot that goes into caring for an animal The Right Way...If you are going to, or want to get an animal Do The Homework on how to care for them. It's sad to say, but a lot of people do harm because they didn't take the time to find out the Right way of doing things. Great blog, I Thank You for it...kudos

When my kids were little, I had taken them to this park, and this dog, though very friendly, and timid, came up to me. He had a spiked collar embedded in his neck. We took him to the nearest vet, and got the collar out, but not before the poor animal had to have tons of stitches. That still burns me to this day!!!!! I love animals, especially Dogs and Cats.
To me, anyone who hurts an animal or allows that animal to be hurt deserves the same treatment for his or herself!

The invention of video is a good thing! How many times was this dog abused and it wasn't caught on tape? There's a good chance he will get his job back and eventually do this again.
The law backs it's own. Having been married to a cop I have seen this first hand.............. Speeding, Drunk driving, stealing from the P.D., personal use of the squad, child abuse, tax evasion, collecting pay for spending a day in the park, having sex in hotels and in the squad while on duty, etc..................... My ex did this and more. His only punnishment was a "talk". He is still a Sgt.!
Beating a dog is nothing unless people speak up and follow through.
