As I was noseying through profiles the other day I viewed a certain ladies profile (she knows who she is) but what I saw, has so far caused me no end of grief!
I just happened to notice the way she had carpeted her stairs and I liked it. We exchanged a few emails and lo and behold a few days later while I was out shopping, I spotted the materials to enable me to do the same thing.
I bought the materials without hesitation and ripped up the stair carpet and grippers. There were a lot of nails in these stairs as they are about 60 years old, but that wasn’t a problem; I went out and bought a nail puller, which is a really effective tool. It’s got a head like a claw hammer, but without the bulky head so it gets into all the awkward spots.
Now for removal of the lead paint, it smells somewhat and melts like chewing gum with the heat gun, but so far I’ve stripped five steps, so I’m a third of the way there.
I’m going to need an electric sander to achieve the finish I want, but have had problems in finding reliable information on them.
I have so far managed to work out for myself that I need an orbital sander with an adjustable speed and I know the power specifications. BUT there are orbital, random, half sheet, quarter sheet, eccentric and most likely others too.
I am lost as to which one I should purchase.
The round sanders appear to be more ergonomic, but they have extra protruding parts, which will be in the way for sanding stairs. My guess is that a rectangular one, with no protruding handles will get closer to the edges and corners.
After visiting three different DIY stores, they don’t seem to have any staff available who know anything useful about the tools they sell.
The internet message boards are filled with professional jargon that’s unknown to me.
The consumer reviews don’t appear to be all that reliable either, with contradictory reviews written about most of the products.
Eventually I will have to decide on sanding sheets, do I get the natural or manmade?
I think the solution is to get out of my old denim combats, put on something a little more feminine and go and smile at the man in the Tool Hire Shop, it seems to work in most places.
It would have been a lot quicker to hoover the stairs.
As for the lady whose profile I viewed, I might thank you one day, I might not.
