sterday I was at Otherlands Coffee Bar in mid-town Memphis writing on my laptop, and heard one of the best conversations I have ever heard between a 50ish African American lady and a white gentleman about 70. He was telling her that he is a reformed former KKK member. They talked and talked and she decided to take him to lunch. They came back about an hour later and said they had decided to become partners in a business venture.

H ow far we have come! Still a ways to go but we have come a long way.

Encouraging. I just hope the business didn't involve rope, nor sheets

This ties in beautifully with Eastham's blog:

(Some of have lived through the entire "evolution" of attitudes and celebrate how far we've come in one lifetime -- although there are still those who should be ashamed of themselves for holding on to theirs )

Tor, I would suggest waiting for the official report to come out before you start walking the streets of Memphis after dark!

Yes we have come a long way! The fact that Obama is this close to becoming the Democratic Presidential Candidate is proof that this country has indeed come a long way. Unfortunately there are still enough white people among us (and I'm white but I'm not one of them) who are still too bigoted to vote for a black man for President and are voting in the primaries for Billary only because she IS white. But then there are those men out there who won't vote for her if she makes it because she's a woman. We still need to practice tolerance people and if we can't do that, we will never have peace in our families and communities let alone our country or the rest of the world.

And whole churches who are voting for him just because he is black. We need much more tolerance and understanding.

Barak Osama Obama - ------- I'd think the bigots would not vote for him because of his middle name, or some such other equally stupid thing.

I hope there are more stories like yours Toric, hundreds more, but I'm a little circumspect.

Before my second boss on Capitol Hill became involved in politics, he was in the insurance business. Once, when he was working for Travellers, the Travellers' rep in Pensacola, FL commited suicide. My boss (Catholic) and Maurice Green (Jewish) were sent down to straighten out affairs. They put in long hours and Pensacola, then, was not the city it is today. There were few restaurants and fewer still that were open past 8:00. So they stopped at this roadhouse and ordered some dinner, but before their food arrived a group of men came into the roadhouse. It didn't take long for my boss and his colleague to figure out the weekly Klan meeting had just ended. After a few minutes, my boss and Mr. Green became intense curiousities. The fled with their lives.

While we have come a long way since 1962 Pensacola and we should be proud of how far we have come, the Jena 6 didn't happen 40 years ago, it happened last year and the vitriol seen on the threads and blogs on MD concerning the events in Jena should give us a little perspective.
