Frankly, I don't think we are serious enough. I should clarify that by serious, I don't mean humorless or incapable of having fun. The problem, however, is that many people, including the speaker in the video confuse self-absorption and being serious.
To give you an idea of how serious we are not and the consequences thereof, let's consider:
1. On September 10, 2001, none of the major networks had a single foreign affairs story in their line-up, but two speculated about the status of the marriage of Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey.
2. In 2005, US networks covered the famine in Niger with a 30-second story, three weeks after the BBC and European news outlets covered the famine. Hundreds starved to death during that period.
3. Yesterday, a press conference called by the First Lady degenerated from a discussion of the devastating flood that has killed 100,000 to a discussion of Jenna Bush's wedding plans.
