America has the American Idol competition every year..
In the Uk, we have the equivalent.. called the X factor.
Before I was even born my Dad was singing in a band, and over the years his career bloomed with acting, he went on to appear in UK series such as 'Robin of Sherwood'.. and 'Treasure Island'
He didnt forget his singing career.. and continued it..
When he moved here to Portugal from the UK, he has sung for stars at expensive golf clubs.. and has been hired privately for many many venues.
There was a show in the 70's called Opportunity knocks.. he passed the audition but the series was cut before he got to sing.
When they advertised this years X factor.. me as his ever proud daughter.. entered him.
He moaned and groaned.. he really didnt want to do it.. but I pushed him.
He set off to the UK.
I contacted our beloved Choosie to help with hotels in her area.. as thats where the auditions were to be held. She was amazing... she got the hotel and even picked my father up from the bus station.
I got a text from her to say she was having a drink with my Dad the night he arrived!.. she was so welcoming and helpful to my Dad who knew no-one in Wales and even met Choosie for the first time that day.
The next day was the auditions.. all I could do was it here and wait...
Would he pass?..Im sure he would..
The wait was agonising...
Then I got the phone call the next day to put me out of my misery..
My Father passed the first audition!!
I cried when I got the news.
He has an amazing voice.
Not just saying this cos this is my Dad.. he really does.
He was given a gold card and told to return the next day.
The next day, the weather was hot.
The air conditioning in the building was full on.. his throat was dry. He didnt have any water.. and many of the other contestants waiting in line also were complaining of the dryness in the building.
His voice faltered.
He was rejected at the 2nd round.
All because his voice was dry and a little croaky.
Hes returned home now to Portugal.
He doesnt feel bad because he knows he did his best and it wasnt his fault about the dryness in the air..
For me?..
Im very proud to have such a great dad.. who at 70 years old beat over 1,000 other contestants to get where he did.
He will continue to sing and write music,, he has his own studio which he will continue to make music in..
as far as being a star is concerned...
He is....
And always will be...
To me..
A Star..

The best part of this whole story is that even at his age he tried something new, and he was good at it when he beat out the others in the first auditions.

I was more than pleased to help your dad with everything.
Cardiff became such a busy place after Wembley was closed and then Cardiff went on to host all the major sporting, entertainment and music events in the UK.
The Hilton Hotel in Cardiff is now more expensive than the London Hilton.
It is difficult to get somewhere to stay at times, most times in fact. As you now know.
The Cardiff Millenium Stadium was the first of it's kind, being an outdoor stadium that has a roof enclosure, it's activated by wet weather.
The stadium is massive, I personally think it's too big for music. Great for sport.
I saw Madonna there in her last Cardiff concert, I am seeing Neil Diamond in a few weeks too, but I don't think it was built with music in mind.
Your dad is a lovely gentleman, it was a great pleasure to meet him and as you say, he can sing, he sings in perfect pitch, a shame he didn't get through.
I love the box of wine he brought me, half his suitcase allowance, that was so sweet of him.
Please send him my best wishes and tell him that he was a pleasure to meet.
