So, here we are again, off the coast of Norway looking for oil. On the same ship as before; in fact, its like I have never been gone. In truth it's much better this time as there is a whole new bunch of people, and so the dynamic has changed and its all more relaxed and dare I say it, enjoyable?
As I write this, the weather has closed operations down for the time being, and we are running for harbour in Bergen. Hmm, Bergen.
Bergen is so very different from Hammerfest; for a start it's green; but that may be because spring has actually arrived this far south. Either way it was a pleasant surprise to arrive there last Tuesday in glorious sunshine, and yet not need arctic clothing. Bergen is also stunning; its a world heritage site, full of old wooden buildings and built at the end of a long fjord. My first thought was how can I live in a place like this; forgetting that the sun doesn't always shine, nor will it always be so warm. Even still, it is a fantastic place, and somewhere that I would like to look round some more. After settling in on the boat, we had a couple of hours to have a walk, and being on a ship, the historic quay was just 10 minutes walk away, and it was easy enough to find an empty table at a street bar, and while away an hour with expensive local beer and watch the world go by. Most of the world being either women coming out of a keep fit classs and various chapters of Hells Angels who were gathering across the road. Sadly, it all had to come to an end, and as the boat was sailing, we had to get back, and that third beer, the one that you really would round the day off whould have to remain undrunk. What we did get was a two hour cruise through fjords, under bridges and past pretty Nordic villages as we made our way out to open sea. And we get paid for this, right? And being a photographer of a kind, being it was evening, the light was just perfect for some pictures.
And so, we now have at least two, if not three days back in port; with the promise of free time each afternoon if we get the jobs done in the morning. Its not all bad this life on the ocean waves.
