I have a terrible curse that follows me everytime I go camping. Whether it's for one night or a week, I always end up with an injury of some kind from the camping trip. Mostly small boo boo's.......only a couple have required trips to the ER.

I was so happy that I was able to announce last weekend before we left to come home that I had made it thru the weekend without a scratch or bruise. I don't count being sunburnt because that can happen to me walking to the mail box. And boy did I get a sunburn to beat all this time. I didn't burn........I fried. By the time I got home my forehead, nose and cheecks were a brown crispy mess that didn't really hurt unless I touched it. It did sting so bad that I couldn't even put aloe on it without crying so I just left it alone.

Finally, yesterday afternoon I put Bag Balm on it and within an hour all of the crispies starting flaking away and by the time I went to bed I had a smooth pink face that stung a little but at least I looked human again. Then I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror. Both of my eyes were swollen and puffy and I had huge lumps at the corner of both eyes near my nose. I waited for a few hours to see if it would go away.........it didn't.

So I have just returned from the ER, seems that my sunburn was so severe that I have aggravated the lymph nodes around my eyes and the swelling is caused by hives. The doctor even had me listen as he pressed the air and fluids out of one of the lumps and I could feel it filling back up. He said the eyes themselves seem to be fine and prescribed Benadryl for a couple of days. If the swelling doesn't go down by then I have to go back. He did say the sunburn itself was healing nicely and should be fine in a few days.

I think I now look like one of those bearcoons that Spring was so afraid of. I guess I didn't make it out unscathed after all.........but I almost made it.

Somehow I get the feeling that pics of this will NOT end up in the Campout Photo Album online

Bag Balm for a sunburn, eh? I never heard of that! I'll have to try it!

Do get rest, Cart, and drink lots of water. Sunburns can be pretty serious

OMG! I've never heard of this happening, but sounds like if its gonna happen it will happen to you!

Bag balm...We used to call this "Grandma's Salve" in my family because it fixed EVERYTHING. I've got a can of it sitting in the bathroom ,but never thought about putting it on my sunburn.

Today my nose is peeling leather. A very nice look, indeed!

OMG!! You take care of yourself...and if the swelling isn't all gone in a couple of days you get your buns back to the doctor!!

I still think those that burn should do a few sessions in a tanning bed before camping....easy does it though...but if you prepare your skin slowly, you won't be so apt to burn. I had a friend that did that before she'd go to Florida in the winter for a week and she'd not come home burned. Just a thought......

ooooooooooooh nooooooooooo! I know all of us were burnt, but this is terrible! So now you have a sun allergy too? I guess I got lucky. I took a bath in aloe when I got home, and next morning after my shower slathered on the Mary Kay Moisture renewal cream, and even my poor swollen lips didn't peel.

Whenever you have been out in the sun you MUST take a COLD shower for a minimum of 45 min to an hour. That's right - it will be painfully cold and you will feel the water run warm as it's going down your legs. You will have goosebumps and think you will die from the cold, but if you do this you will not peel or have unbelievably minimal peeling and you will be more tanned than pink. You must draw out all that heat from HOURS in the sun by spending a long time under the cold water. Use a low pressure so you can save some water but it's worth the wasted water to avoid Sun Poisoning.

Oh Car, I feel just terrible. Hard to believe out of nearly 40 adults not ONE of us remembered sunscreen.

I hope you are doing better by now.

Please buy yourself a straw hat for this summer...and a jar of plain old Noxzema.
As soon as you come out of the sun put some Noxzema on the exposed area to take
the heat out...Vinegar is also a good thing for over exposed skin, easy to get and cheap!
Also, Always have a water bottle with you, 80% of people are dehydrated and don't even
know it until it's too late...It's one of the main reasons people are tired all the time.

I hope you are doing better...take care.

OW!

And I was so impressed at all the activity and excitement you made it through. Yikes, those after-effects are unbelievable.

I hope the Benedryl did the trick and that you're feeling a lot better by now.

(Hah, I knew there was a good reason for me to get a tan in the winter...just in case I might accidently find myself outside in the summer weather. I was a good Girl Scout...always prepared.)

A "bearcoon"...C'mon, I hope you got a picture, even if it's for your hidden archives.

Dang woman! The ER? I can't believe how many of y'all were sunburned. Either my skin is used to the sun or I spent too much time in the cabin. LOL I'm hoping you helade well, Cartay.
