I Thank God I'm an American.
Many of you reading this are from various other countries, and I'm sure you thank God you are from....wherever you are from. We all have our reasons for loving and hating our nations, leaders and the laws that govern every society.
But America has considered itself the standard by which social freedom and human rights are measured across the globe...even when other countries disagree with our foreign policies or our dealth penalty. Even in such an open society where religious freedom and even mockery of our President is tolerated...NAY, celebrated... we are a very conservative country. People seem to be surprised by that statement when I make it in large groups, but it's true. Most of the civilized world has no problem with nudity and profanity on their public television broadcasts, beaches and public places. We monitor and fine such behavior in our media, and you'll find yourself in jail for breaking American obscenity laws regarding nudity in public. So, where is this "freedom is tantamount" philosophy of which we assume we are made?
It turns out, most Americans are a little bit like me. I like nudity if I get to choose the "quality" of it. That choice might also change from day to day. I'm not always in the mood for MILF porn. Who am I kidding? Yes, I am....but that's not the point. I'd like to drive through McDonalds without having to see some 60-something gal's boobs bouncing around below her belly button. Just like so many of you would like to give grandma the RIGHT to run around naked if it strikes her fancy, I'd like the right not to go hysterically blind while ordering a Big Mac. Why should her rights be any more important than mine.?
Nudity is not obscene. It is not disgusting or the root of all evil. It is no different than 6 f-bombs in a half-hour show or the image of a man having his heart torn still beating from his chest. I know where to go to find all of those things SHOULD I CHOOSE TO VIEW THEM, but I appreciate knowing I can avoid them during the course of my typical day, if that is my goal. You have no right to infringe on my comfort or gag-reflex when I am not prepared for it..!! It is NOT the same to compare public nudity to the violence or profanity we allow in our "rated and monitored" entertainment. I have to seek out those stimuli to be affected by them, and they don't cross the parking lot at McDonalds.
We control the extreme elements of our society so that it can be a society. Anything less is anarchy. Stop whining, or move to France. Just don't expect their form of freedom to keep you from being invaded!!
My apologies to the French...and grandma.
Kyle~
