So I'm driving down the road and come across a sign that say's " safety belt checkpoint ahead " and sure as hell there's 4 cops, 2 on each side of the road checking if everyone has a safety belt on. Speed limit on this road is 35 MPH.
So I'm thinking isn't there more pertinent issue's at hand that these police officer's could be doing. Let's say off the top of my head, an illegal immigrant checkpoint. Maybe a spastic driver on the cell phone checkpoint.
Why is it that the generally law abiding public seems to be always under scrutiny and that the real criminals walk around robbing, killing, abusing, selling drugs, etc. with little concern about law enforcement nor the law.
I think it this, our liberal friends and organizations spend more money protecting and ensuring the rights of every degenerate in the country then normal law abiding Americans.
These people and organizations have successfully sued law enforcement and agencies to the point they virtually are useless. Nothing more for them to do but sit in the car with radar on, seat belt checkpoints or respond to crime surely don't prevent it.
In closing,
Michigan and all the problems we have our leaders find such importance in banning smoking in bars. Why do they submit and debate such minute legislation? because it comes with little confrontation from our liberal powerhouses.
You don't see them developing, submitting and debating legislation on welfare reform. You don't see them debating right to work legislation. You don't see them debating on what to do with Kwame Kilpatrick. You don't seem them debating the 21% graduation rate. You don't see these people developing, submitting and developing any legislation that will piss off the spew chucking liberal forces in this State.

this is my thoughts on the matter....they know when they run up against law abbiding citizens they are safe fo write tickets or to confront them....its a whole other matter to go after real crime.....out there.....its so easy to pick the pockets of those that cause them no harm....over the years i have less and less respect for the so called law out there....they may be watching me....but im also watching them........cookie

This is a little like strolling through a mine field,,,but,,,
Seatbelt checkpoints, are like DUI checkpoints. They serve many purposes other than just - checking for seatbelts.
They allow for inspections of vehciles - tires, lights, etc., They allow for inspection of registrations, etc. They often result in DUI or other violations, They often pull in persons with outstanding warrents, It's a great tool for looking for a single suspect. (Face it, if they called it a road block to search for a felon,,,,the neighborhood would go balistic.)
And above all, it allows the police department to show the colors, remind people that they are there, and to justify their budgets.
Ever notice how these checkpoints seem to go up around election periods, budget generation time, etc.

Bardnsage,
We have 2.2 million people in jail that "commited a crime". We no longer prevent crime we respond to it. 50% of the murders in this country go unsolved. You call the police to report your car was broken into and they tell you to call your insurance company. I agree it has in part a budget catalyst but you can't negate the fact that our liberal friends have severely compromised the system.

Here in Maryland they are trying to pass the law that you can"t smoke in your car if you have passengers that don't smoke also. I am not sure how they are going to enforce that one but it bothers me because as they were talking about that law on the radio I looked over at the car next to me and there was a mother driving down the road at 55 mph with her child on her lap (child about 2) now to me that is way more life threatening then worring about someone smoking in their own car. I dont get it and guess I never will!

It amazes me how if the Police sit outside of a bar and wait for the drunks to come out at 2am is entrapment , But stopping vehicles on a main thoroughfare and checking for a worn seatbelt isn,t . Sit in the bar , Get drunk and kill someone and his or her family , But smoke in your vehicle and buddy your in big trouble . I Love America but the people who are running it sure need an overhaul .
It totally discusts me it really does. Common sense just does not exist anymore in our country I swear.

Ranger, the only paying ticket I've ever received was a 55 dollar seatbelt ticket issued by the Illinois State Police. I went to my local state rep to chew ass and couldn't, because he agreed with me about the intrusiveness of the law. He told me in no uncertain terms, that the law was voted in for one reason, "to bring in money for the state." Since that time, I've slowly lost most of my respect for the police.
When you come upon one of these checkpoints, doesn't it sort of remind you of a country we once fought? "Your papers please" Wolf

Bardnsage states;
You were discussing the seat belt check point,,,,, not the overall state of crime and punishment......
But, I will be happy to go with you...
There are way too many people in jail. It is it's own community. And unlike ours, rules are hardfast, and the consequences for breaking them is swift, and severe.
Bring back the chain gangs, and let the prisoners build the roads, clean municiple buildings, collect trash, etc......
Of course, that might be problematic, in that the professionals working for the government company would not be able to siphon fat union contracts to the people who keep sending them to the the lake for ,,,,, PLANNING WORKSHOPS.
Perhaps, we could institute public service incarceration. Those persons convicted of crimes could go dust off turtles in Death Vally, or fix walking trails in the national parks, or go count polar bears,,,,,,, something with a positive result for the nation as a whole,,,,, so we would not have to spend more tax dollars on grants for some pinhead to go do it.....

You were discussing the seat belt check point,,,,, not the overall state of crime and punishment..... Well I'm actually discussing why generally law abiding citizens seem to fall under the most legislation scrutiny.
Why does our legislative branch of government and law enforcement agencies seemingly concentrate on insignificant issue's while avoiding issue's that are obviously of more importance. Ragtopcookie touched on the issue ;
this is my thoughts on the matter....they know when they run up against law abbiding citizens they are safe fo write tickets or to confront them....its a whole other matter to go after real crime

Here's a thought.
There is no credible scientific proof whatsoever that 2nd hand smoke kills or makes ill anyone. Nobody has ever died or has been made ill from exposure to 2nd hand smoke. I can't find 1 proven case where an individual exposed to long term second hand smoke had died or has been made ill.

When you come upon one of these checkpoints, doesn't it sort of remind you of a country we once fought? "Your papers please" Yes it does but for a variety of different reasons. In those day's such country's were looking for enemies of the State. Today in the United States were penalizing those who are generally suppoters of the State.

Bardnsage states;
OK, I'm agreeing that most of the legislation load that generates income for the government company is aimed at the middle of the road person. And revanue generation is an important part of that. The government company is having a hard time trying to support outrageous spending, with declining revanues.
The loss of manufacturing jobs overseas does not just mean that people will have to go to work for Walmart, it means that taxable property for the government has gone down. In addition, a manufacturing plant has real value, and finnacial jobs and retail jobs do not generate deep seated value to the tax base, or the economy.
So, the government company is going broke, again.
Look at VA. In an effort to raise funds, if you are convicted of speeding, more than 5 miles an hour over the limit, you receive not only your speeding fine and cost of court (even if you don't appear), but you are hit with a $1000 (let me spell that, one thousand) additional fine by the department of motor vehicles, (the agency that issues your liscense, not enforeces the speed limit), or they revoke your liscense.
I love traveling in VA, since I live in North Carolina. I'm thinking of starting a cottage business letting people "live" in my rental house in the country, so they can obtain a NC liscense. If I rent them for $250 a year, they save $750. I bet I can put a couple of hundred in that little house, no problem.

The loss of jobs oversea's contributes to " no smoking in bars " how?
To put a warning sign a 100 yards from motorist warning them that there is a " safety belt checkpoint ahead " to me does not constitute a conspiracy to gain revenue. You would have to be terribly stupid not heed the warning.
Is there a conspiracy to gain revenue on behalf of city's and states. Sure there is.

I am sure you know by now, LR, that a lot of people "just do not get it" about a lot of things. You have witnessed that right here. lol
We have state troopers here this weekend with check points to see if anyone has beer or hard liquor in their cars. I live in a dry county and it is against the law for anyone to possess a can of beer in a car. After all the state troopers have to earn their pay and that is a good way to bring in money into the counties.
I laugh at the roadbocks. I have a state trooper in my pocket. It pays to be a teacher sometimes, expecially if that kid goes on to become a state trooper. lol
They let the illegals go here. Too much paper work and Hillary would get upset to have her voters deported.
Good blog as usual, LR. Kudo!

When it comes down to it, it's all about the almighty dollar. Justice is of no concern anymore.
Do what I have learned to do. Ignore, ignore, ignore.
Wave to a cop and I can almost guarantee that you will be pulled over.
Black and white is all they can see.
Can you say ego trip?
