It’s really hard to find work in the UK at the moment with a lot of the work going to people from other parts of Europe, especially the Polish.

There are newly qualified Doctors who are out of work and it's hard to get to see an English speaking Doctor at any time.

There really isn’t much in my field of work within my immediate area, most of the work is in the North East and South of England and I don’t want to travel huge distances anymore, I’m tired of that.

A lot of the work is being sent to China, leaving us Engineers here in office jobs to tell them how to do things, that hardly excites me.

I like to get my hands dirty, I love playing with the machines in the machine shop, I love the excitement of destructive testing, I love the smell of the foundry, the noise of the injection moulding machines, the press shop, the smell of oil, I love seeing my finished product and the satisfaction I get from my input.

I couldn’t swap that contentment for pushing a pen all day.

A lot of the work is contracted out to India too, not that I would want to work in a Call Centre, and especially one out in India, it would bore me to tears.

Did you know that alcoholics in the UK are entitled to claim benefits for up to three years? That seems to be one of the most attractive options here at the moment.

Kind of sounds like the U.S. One can sit on their azz and be quite capable of work yet collect all kinds of help. Myself I wouldn't do it and doubt you would either lady! So what cha gonna do? Music?

How is it you have too much medical personel? We don't have enough doc's here!

I love the way you write as you really put the reader there. I'm sorry they have you conferencing over the phone, totally sucks.

As for the alcoholics, are you saying if I ever choose to relapse I should do it in England? Three years? Thats preposterous, people need to feel productive in order to be successful at anything. If I sat around for three years I don't believe I would be where I am now. I for sure would have had entirely too much time on my hands, leaving me bored to death, leaving me with nothing to think about but drinking which would make me crave a drink. Just doesn't make sense to me at all.

Addiction is about low self esteem, help them build their self esteem by making them feel worthy. Going to school and getting my education did wonders for me. Not that that kind of stress is for everyone, but I hope that they are required to do something other than sitting around all day and hopefully it is something that builds the esteem.....

~Yes I agree.its a frustrating position to be in .. maybe we are too generous to the EU countries...?
Certainly some government Ministers should have had more foresight...

The states were making everything during the pinnacle of the industrial revolution...now it seems that the service industry thrives while most manufacturing is done elsewhere. I work for a huge company that delivers electricity...so we don't actually "make" anything either.

roll with the punches...

Thank you for reading my blog

It was my pleasure!

Did you ever consider tatting?

(How can you write with such a British accent?)

Too bad I'm neither a drinker - or in the market for a 3,000 mile move...

But since you enjoy the chaos of the foundry, the dust and finished product... perhaps you should consider being a sculptor?

I've hear Holland and Australia give stipends to their artists...

Just a thought.

Change is difficult (and inevitable)......I'm with Psycho---consider focusing on your tatting. My antimacassars are wearing thin. One customer already, right here in Oregon. (giggle) Antimacassars in Oregon is a strange thought.

I have a friend that needs a remote controled trap. Perhaps you could design and build one.

If you think of migrating, consider Apalachicola, Florida.

I would be willing to teach you motorcycle repair. With gas prices like they are, lots of folks will need cycle repair, Or bicycle mechanics, Or fixing Roller skates.

I can't say I have a well stocked wine cellar, or any cellar at all, but I have about 75 two liter coke bottles full of home made wine crammed into the crawl space under my house ( It is as close to a cellar as I have.) I'll share.

As far as work, we mostly procrastinate it. It saves us the postage of mailing stuff to China to get it done, I guess you could learn to be a consultant at that, but most of us are already very good at it, so pickings may be a bit slim in that line.

As far as alcoholic employment, we have an opening for a town drunk. The pay is so dismal no one will fill the position, so we all have to take turns, as volunteers.

It is however a great place to be unemployed, and the fishing is good most of the year. Over half the county gets some sort of government money, so that can't be too hard to set up. It is a veritable land of government financed opportunity.

There are lots of nice guys here, and if your height / width ratio is 2.75 or more, you will be toward the front of the line, looks wise.

If you decide to come, please let me know in advance, as Sweet Thang will need a lot of prepping to get used to the idea of my having an international visitor, a female one at that. Don't let her or her shotgun deter you, though.

More or less sincerely, Ttomtarr

I am so glad you wrote this blog! My son is going into Architectural Engineering. He has one year of college left, but is working his first Engineering job this summer. You wrote this blog so beautifully. Knowing my son - what all he is into over the years and all of his likes/passions, then reading this, really helps me to understand his passion for what he is going into, why he has knocked himself out to get to the point he is at, even pushing aside dating until he gets his degree. Your explanation helped me to see just how perfect this field is for him.
Kudos!

Did you know that in the States I have to pay my someday Ex 60% of my net income so she can continue to do the same thing that ruined the marriage. DRINK. How's that for screwed. I work my ass off and live in poverty while she sits on her ass and consumes large quantities of beer. Got to love it. But I'm still happier where I'm at.
