I was planning my summer vacation to coincide with the marriage of my nephew in late July. His Dad (my brother) called me today and informed me that my nephew moved his wedding up 4 weeks th the 5th of July and has changed his last name and has barred any of his relatives from the wedding. Needless to say we are all stunned and saddened. I have never had a cross word with my nephew and I want to call him, but I think I want to talk to his sister and his mother and a few of his cousins first to see what the heck is really going on. I have never had a situation like this happen and am not quite sure how to handle it or if I should say anything at all.

Depends on your relationship with the nephew. If you are close, call him and say "what gives" I was looking forward to celebrating your marriage with you. If you don't know him very well, call mom, sisters, etc for some background info and send him a note telling him you'd like to talk to him and were looking forward to attending his wedding.

I'm a straightforward person and would just call him. What's your first gut instinct...that's what you should do.

You may need a family conference - sounds like he got himself into a cult or something weird?? How many MEN change their name - very odd indeed. Good luck figuring this out!

How many MEN change their name - very odd indeed. Good luck figuring this out!

While it is not very usual here, history is filled with instances of men changing their last names at the time of their marriage. Sometimes it involved the propertied classes, but in the case of working class individuals many years ago when last names were a reflection of an occupation, the sons-in-law would change their name to get into a guild or the profession of the father-in-law. A third alternative is that in a family full of girls, sometimes a groom was asked to change his name to ensure the family name continued. A fourth, sometimes a long and complicated last name was tossed by the wayside for something short and sweet. In my experience at the cemetery, I know of a family where the wife's first marriage ended not only in divorce, but in the kidnapping of one of her children (the ex-husband took the son and left the daughter). The child's mother eventually remarried, but requested her new husband take her name so that if her child should come looking for her, he would know her name.

However, in this day and age, if your nephew is not up for becoming the Duke of Claridge, a blacksmith, is marrying the 7th of 7 daughters, has a name that has 12 consonants and no vowels and is not involved in a kidnapping situation, I too would wonder if he hasn't been pulled into a cult.

If that is the case, it is a very sad situation and will cause longterm grief for the entire family. You have my sympathies and prayers.
