I've yet to figure out how "We're not the best we can be," can be replied to with"So, you think the crappiest place on earth to live is better than here? Maybe you should go live there!" When the roof is leaking, who tells you, 'That's a great house! What do you want to fix it for? Maybe you should just go live in the ghetto awhile and find out how good you've got it!" This constant advocacy of a "love it or leave it" attitude actually reveals a basic flaw wherein the advocates have to convince themselves that they are never wrong, that the worst here is better than it is anywhere else, and that all the things they dislike about this country can all be blamed on someone else and that it somehow got "slipped in" by a minority group. If they didn't try to rationalize it that way, they would have to have their fragile egos shattered when they have to face up to the truth that they aren't perfect. They're not really criticizing "America" when THEY bitch and scream that we have too many social programs or pay too much in taxes? You want no individual taxes? Want someone to tell you that you should go live in Monaco then? (Not that most of you can afford the cost of living, of course.) You claim a flat tax is so great? Want someone to tell you that you should go live in Serbia or Slovakia where they have a flat tax then? Want to claim that only liberals feel that the individual is greater than the state while you screech about how the state has no right to take all YOUR money in taxes? Be prepared to listen to me tell you what a hypocrite you are. If you believe you owe everything to the state they ask of you, then pay up and shut up. If you think all those laws passed by "liberals" are so bad, despite the fact they were passed by duly authorized representatives elected by their constituents, I guess that means you're in the minority on that issue. And if you're criticizing the system, then what are you criticizing but America? If you want to claim that there "isn't any brainwashing going on" by this administration on their favorite issues, then talk about how the liberals have brainwashed people on environmental issues like global warming, then expect me to tell you that you're two-faced. Don't expect you can criticize this country for one thing yourself and turn around and tell me I'm unpatriotic for criticizing it for another matter and that I somehow have less right to live here than you without me telling you I think you're full of sh*t.
"If you agree with me on what is wrong with this country, well, then you're cool, but it you criticize anything else about it, you should just go live somewhere else." What a two-faced crock. And yeah, being told "you should go live somewhere else" pisses me off.
