As Ive posted before, I'm a home improvement contractor. Two winters ago biz was slowing down. Last summer, I didnt have 2 jobs back to back,I would finish a job before the next one came. Past winter was bad........This spring dead. I have worked for myself 20 odd years, and now face going to work for someone else, which is very hard to do. A few months ago, I started a process to get a job with the local rail road company. That is finally coming thru ... I start in 2 weeks. Im the mean time ...work is totaly dead. Besides having no money, I am bored to tears.
I decided to do something...im driving a taxi :) Beats sitting home. The money isnt much... but ya gotta do what you gotta do. Once I get the rail road job...ill still have to find something to make Like $200 a week more, since the job is lower paying at the beginning.
With almost 50 years on this planet... I have never had to work 2 jobs to make ends meet.....and im not optimistic of the future the way things are looking. It seems our economic problems are complex with no quick or easy fix. Ill be ok with this new job... But I worry about the future....and what life will be like on this planet and for my son when he grows up. I think it will be very different.

I show up at work, and they let me. Can I ask for more?

You need a sugar mama.

I'm a VP of a small insurance company. I'm constantly seeing the impact of a worsening economy on our clients. Much of it seems to be driven by the increasing price of oil. I'm seeing our contractors scramble harder for jobs and they are bidding on jobs that in the past they would not have bothered to bid on.

The other thing.....Is house values had risen so much... they could take out equity.
They could take $100k out of their house... and spend $80k on a new kitchen.
Those days are gone.

I'm doing fine living in Mexico. We had the same problem in Louisiana doing the same kind of work. Let's face it, there is a giant recession on the way. This is nothing. It may not appear to be a recession it's just that the money isn't worth anything. Whatever you can buy at a good price, is made to throw away in two years. America wasn't designed to utilize public transportation without paying a huge price. Hmmmmmm the answer the politicians always come up with is just start another war. It takes the unemployed and young people off the street, builds a sector of the business community who basically has no morals so will back anything the government wants to do and we are off and running again.

I'm a teacher and I'm doing ok. I could have retired last year but financially is not feasible yet. I'm planning on about 4 more years of teaching before I retire, then will look for something part time in or around the small town I live near. I just need something to keep me busy and get me out of bed each day!

My biggest worry is about people on fixed incomes with all the rising costs. I have several friends who are not doing real well.

My greatest investment yet is in ammunition. I buy it by the tractor trailer truck load, and sell it for halve the cost that every store around me sells it for. And it comes with a little comment I give to all my customers, Good/bad I'm the man with the gun.

They know that we're in a (Depression) and ammo is the only thing worth it's weight in gold when the bottom falls out. It can be used for protection and hunting.

My next business venture is compressed saw dust pellets for pellet stoves. Half price in the winter, and a quarter of the cost in the summer to stock pile for winter.

When people are in need, I get money. Business is good.

I too own a small contracting company, though I am blessed that mine is booming.

Now, the truth is most of my contractor friends are hurting big time and many supply houses have closed up in my area, so I am not foolish enough to think just because I am doing good that I am the standard.

The price of oil is hurt every phase of our economy, not just construction.

I am sorry to hear you were force to closed and that you now have to work two jobs you shouldn't be doing if the economy was doing good. I will give you major credit for doing whatever it takes to bring money in and not let your ego get in the way, bravo

If people keep getting tighter with their money, the recession will last far longer.

Every job is link to another.
