So, we are now sailing further north after spending two days in the pretty port and town of Kristiansund.
Kristiansund is built around three fjords and on a couple of islands, and feels a much smaller place than Bergen. Downtown there are a few small office blocks, but the rest of the town is the usual mix of brightly coloured Nordic houses built amongst trees and shrubs.
We were in port to shelter from some bad weather; sadly for us our usuual mooring was taken by a cruise ship; so we were tied up a good 45 minute walk from town. So, Saturday night we all headed our en mass to head for a bar known to some of those who had been here before, Oncles.
The main part of the town is spead along a narrow gorge at the bottom of which the yachts and motor boats of the rich and good are moored. The evening was perfectly still, and the quiet was only broken by the Kristiansund Massive who cruise round in the souped up BMWs and Mustangs. Well, one of each anyway.
We found the bar with no problem, and settled down for some beers, some chat, and just look at the scene outside in the harbour as the sun slowly went down.
The sun set at three minutes to midnight, and rose again two hours fifty mintes later. Or did the day before, I don't know about Saturday night as we had moved on the a music bar and we caught up in the sheer delight the band were showing up on the tiny stage.
Quite how they got all 6 musicians up there, and have room for the drums, keyboards, etc, but they quite clearly played for the sheer love of it, and we were all caught up in the moment. They played the usual mix of American rock tunes; the occasional Bob Dylan and one or two Norwegain songs. If anything, it was a better night than the Foo Fighters, we all loved it.
Looking outside at two in the morning and seeing it just about light is an odd feeling. Your mind told you its late, but your eyes say, hey, it's light! The night ended at three; it was fully light, and some of us had the brains to queue for a taxi and get home at a reasonable time; other walked back.
Yesterday, in a bid not to spend £50 on a round of drinks, we went exploring, and climbed a hill overlooking the town because we could, and it was free. So soon after getting out of the town we left what noise of modern life behind, and all around us the sounds of nature.
Up there we could see all round the town, at the various fjords and other hills that made the town. We could see the cruise ship leaving, and the hydropane ferry whizzing through the small islands near the harbour entrance.
With that, we climbed back down, and decided that a walk into town, and then back again was a little ambitious. And called it a night.
