With all the flood on the news.....I thought I would share my true story.
11 years ago I watched my Father...at the ripe age of 70+ see our neighbors yards, basements........and rooms fill with water as ours did. He would put on his knee waders and walk thru the water. He'd check the sump pumps to make sure they continued to pump. Most of the time the rains came and it was in the middle of the night when the water rose, and started into our basements. I remember one time when the police came and asked us to move our vehicles from our gargae areas.......at 2 am.
Not at any one time has he ever showed me any remorse for living here. As a matter of fact........he loved living here as he did for over 30 years with my Mom.
I love it here just the same. I have had scares of the water myself. Had as many as 500 sand bags placed around the house to protect it. And as you can imagine.........the smell of that water after 4 days and then all the debri that washed in.....not to mention fish wading in your yard to removing all those sandbags? Let me tell you.... pretty dang nasty!
But over rall......I have to remind myself..........I chose to live here. It's a great spot, nature all around, heron's flying , ducks with there babies see evidence of beavers along the roadway, many types of birds, boaters.... need I say more?
I made a promise to my Dad that I would enjoy what he built back in 1952 and that I would NOT let the village take this land, and turn it into a white water rapids........canoe shoot area. There are 22 house that live along this river bank......and all of us are watching this river.
Us river people are strong individuals.
