I have a Siberian Husky by the name of OZ, the Great and Powerful. He was born on December 14th, 2007. He is only 6 months old, already over 50 lbs., and is a most incredible force in my life.....just like that. Something I hadn't counted on at all. Graceful as a gazelle, as powerful as a bull......
He talks all the time. In a language all his own. I always understand. Odd isn't it? Sometimes he doesn't say a thing, and I know exactly what he is talking about! I bet I couldn't understand Gaelic or Welsh as clearly as I understand The Great and Powerful OZ.
He often "asks" if we can play. He is amazingly gentle. And powerful. Patient too. He can wait all day to play if he has to. Without a single complaint.
His eyes are crystal blue, and can look right through you. I always know what he is thinking. I know what he expects from me. And I happily try to make him as content as he can be. I am learning things from him......that aren't things at all.
He favors the outdoors, especially when it is snowing and cold. Lately, he is suffering a bit from the heat. But....without complaint.
I intend on buying one of those small hard plastic wading pools, and on the weekends, or maybe during the hot evenings, filling it up with water and a few bags of ice for him to romp in.
He is a wonderful friend and I know he loves me. How do I know?
By the way he treats me. Simply by the way he acts. That's it. He has never told me. He shows me every day. Yeah...I observe...and I am learning. I try to follow his example daily. It is a daunting task. I am not nearly as good at it as he is.
There is one thing I can do that he can't.....I do know how to drive. And he hasn't really asked for the car keys yet.....he has brought them to me a few times, but for the most part......he seems happy enough to just ride in the back with his head hanging out the window, smiling. He always has a smile on his face. Especially when we are headed for the river.......he loves that.
I think if I could have a few of the World Leaders of my choosing, to come together and spend some time with the Great and Powerful OZ.....well...I just think they might just come out of that meeting with a different view than they went in with.
If they could open their minds and hearts to him that is.
I am sure The Great and Powerful OZ would have no trouble making friends out of each of them.
They may even come outta there with a deeper understanding of just how many things there are to learn about life. And they might even learn a little about how much time they are wasting on dangerous and foolish things. They might even learn about unconditional love. I am sure they would learn more about tennis balls and rope pull toys , and probably would begin to forget all about missiles land mines, nuclear bombs, guns and fighting and stuff.
I have had a lot of "teachers" in my time. But The Great and Powerful OZ is as different as any creature I have ever known. He is my student. And he is my teacher.
Yes....a most humble, loyal and powerful teacher. I am one lucky man.
I suspect I am not the only one living with a "teacher"....... I bet some of you have "teachers" in your own lives. I hope you pay attention to them. They are quite wise really. They are all around us....we often don't even see them when they are right beside us all along. But they are closer than you might think. [Boo!]
Spend some time with your teacher this weekend....have some fun....open your hearts........throw the magic ball and see who brings it back to you, tenfold. With a smile on their face.
