It's another scotching summer day of record setting heat here in Southern California. The still air moves only with the occasional hot burst of a slight breeze and within moments of stepping outside you're drenched in a sticky sweat no matter what you're wearing. I live in the foothills where it's usually a little cooler and the projected high here today is 106 degrees. I can hear the AC units in the neighborhood around me already humming away. Mine is struggling to keep it at 78 and it's only 8:15 in the morning, a sign that today is not going to be good. I just hope the power stays on. I'm soaking some of my trees, bushes and recently planted jade plants right now in a hopefully-not-in-vain attempt to keep some life them. After almost a week of this many of my plants and bushes are sunburned and the leaves are blackened from the heat, almost like a fire has roared though and singed them all. Two years ago we had a similar heat wave of 100+ degree heat for two weeks straight and it killed a colorful Japanese Plum tree in my front yard, I was lucky to save my other trees. I'm going to try to not let that happen again yet still be conscience of my water usage, we are after all in a drought as well. Had the day had a normal temperature I would be outside right now doing my yard work and washing the car, but I think today my plans are going to be to stay inside and do as little as possible. Maybe take a long cool soak in the tub and definitely make a large pitcher of sun tea with lots of ice and just a taste of sugar. I think it's time to catch up on some movie watching and play a few games on the PC...maybe even do a little writing. But first, breakfast. I think I hear a cinnamon raisin bagel calling my name....

Oh, girl, I know where you're coming from! I was up before 6 this morning, and after feeding the animals and having some yogurt and coffee, I thought I'd take the dog for a walk. We left at 7 am to walk the trail around the large wetland (which is mostly a DRYLAND right now) behind my house.
It was HOT out there! I mean HOT HOT sweat dripping down between your boobs hot! (Sorry guys....it's ugly, but it happens) I didn't even want to let the dog stop and sniff anything interesting unless it was a shady spot.
Tomorrow morning, we're taking our walk at dawn!

Yard Irrigation trick,,,,,save water, get the most done.
Every April, I dutifully plant my maters (tomatoes), in the nice little raised garden beside the house. It cathes the morning sun, but is shaded from the afternoon sun. (trick one - but read on).
When I plant these little gems,,,,a real testiment to the optimistic nature of man,,,,I bury a cat liter bucket beside them. (paint bucket will do),,,, These are hard plastic buckets, with nice little lids. They hold a couple of gallons each. In the bottom, I have poked a couple of small holes, with a hot Ice Pick.
The bottom of the bucket is about 14 inches down, and I pierce the lid to accept a short piece of hose. I put one bucket in between 4 to 6 plants. Burry the whole mess, and leave the hose sticking out of the ground. Cover the soil with newspaper, and then pine straw or organic mulch. I prefer the mulch.
Every couple of days, until you have established a rythem,,,, check the buckets with a dip stick. Fill them with a hose, and forget them. The water leaches out of the buckets, below the root system of the plants, forceing them to push their roots lower, and thus become more drought resistant. It also helps cut down on evaporation of the water.
Try it..... it's great for trees. Other trick for trees is to root prune them in the fall, right at the drip line of the tree, and then water the next season at the drip line....

We suffered those 100+ degree days a couple of weeks ago....it was awful. Today has been overcast & dreary all day long....another good reason to take it easy in the house.
