“Here's a list of suggestions for tonight's movie.”
I tossed the paper on Dan's desk.
“Everyone's asking for The Rock.”
Grinning, Dan linked his hands behind his head, leaned back in his chair and swung is size 12s onto the desk in front of him. “There's no way I'm getting The Rock.”
The muscles in his chest strained against his tee-shirt and I dropped my eyes, straightening up the papers on his desk. I wondered if he did that on purpose, and found myself getting grumpier. These f***ing men were oblivious sometimes: or maybe they're not, maybe they knew exactly what they were doing.
I snorted in disgust. “Jesus, Dan. You think the movie's gonna incite a riot? You afraid admin will be stormed by a bunch of women wielding crochet hooks and sewing needles? Get real.”
There was a thump as Dan's feet hit the floor. “What the hell's wrong with you, Kinder? You pissed-off 'cause your girlfriend got walked off the compound?”
Blood washed into my cheeks, and I felt my heart pounding in my temples. My elbows shook as I leaned over the desk, putting my face closer to Dan's. “You can't have it both ways,” I hissed. “Either she's f***ing me, or Mr. Lewis. Make up your mind.”
Dan raised his hands, rolling his chair back a few inches. “Stand down, Jen. I'm sorry. But what the hell are you thinking, asking me for The Rock? You know damn well it'll never be approved; it's about a prison break, for christ's sake.”
“Well, not technically. It's actually about a guy breaking into prison....”
Dan shook his head impatiently. “And you know if we show it here, we gotta show it to the guys next door. You women don't riot, but it's tense over there right now with the riots in New York. You know they're on lockdown.”
“Yeah, yeah. You're right.” I flopped into my chair next to the desk. “I'm just so angry. Sabrina doesn't deserve this shit.”
Dan assumed his favorite position, pectorals back on display, and again I averted my eyes, looking instead at his Nike “Just Do It!” poster on the wall above his head and shifted uncomfortably in my chair. Dan still wasn't wearing his wedding ring, though I'd suggested it when he first came on.
“And you're taking it out on me. Hey Kinder, I'm just the head of recreation, I'm not with Special Investigation Services. I didn't have anything to do with your friend going to the hole. Hell, I don't even know Mr. Lewis. And I bet you know more than I do. I heard they pulled you up to admin for questioning.”
I heard the curiosity in his voice and dropped my gaze from the poster of the svelte, Nike-clad running-woman, meeting Dan's eyes and slid farther down in my chair, locking my hands behind my head, crossing my legs out in front of me.
“Assholes.” God, his eyes were so clear and blue. “They kept threatening to pack me out, send me to the hole.” Why the hell doesn't he wear a wedding ring?
“Yeah? What else did they do?” Those blue eyes flicked to my breasts, then quickly back up to my face.
I stretched, thrusting my chest out a bit more. “They asked a bunch of questions about Sabrina, Mr. Lewis, Mr Taylor and Mr. Herman. I guess there were reports of an unofficial going away party in the greenhouse for Mr. Lewis. They said one of the gals on the compound saw Mr. Lewis and Sabrina making out in the ditch. Such bullshit.”
Dan flexed his pecs. “A going away party? Mr. Lewis is going back inside? He came over the same time as I did. His rotation isn't over for another six months.”
“I guess. They're using this bogus investigation to get him out of here, put him back next door with the guys. They can't fire him, the charges are bunk; he and Sabrina never f***ed, never did anything against the rules. She was just his clerk. Nothing more.”
Our eyes locked. “What do you think's really going on then?” His voice was soft, and I felt the room tilt.
“You really want to know?” I was falling into his eyes.
He nodded slowly and I felt a disturbing tingle in my crotch.
