Prison Intrigue starts here
Launching out of my chair I again planted my hands on his desk, leaning toward him. “Mr. Herman's cooking the books down there in construction, that's what's going on.” I felt the blood rush back into my face, and my voice shook. “Sabrina came across some receipts for copper wire at $9,999 a spool. The cost with the old distributor was $999.”
Dan again wheeled his chair back. “Jesus,” he breathed softly. He really didn't want to know, but I went on relentlessly. “And word is, the sales rep for the new company is Mr. Herman's brother-in-law. Sabrina and Mr. Lewis made copies of the invoices, put them somewhere safe.”
My breathing was shallow; I was taking all my helpless anger and frustration out on Dan, but didn't care. “And those SIS agents—f***ing slimy. They kept telling me if I didn't come clean about the relationship between Sabrina and Mr. Taylor they'd put the word out on the compound that I was a snitch.” I snorted, “Like I was supposed to start quaking in my boots and sniveling at their threat.”
“What'd you do?”
“I laughed. Told them they'd been on the other side too long; those guys might shank each other behind some bogus snitch-rumor, but women don't act that way—at least not in a minimum-security prison camp. We're all too worried about when our children are gonna come visit. Besides, no one would believe them. I didn't snitch to reduce my sentence, why the hell would I snitch behind some piddly-assed, trumped-up SIS investigation?”
“Jesus,” he said again, but this time I caught a note of admiration in his voice, and I liked it.
“Then they went all hard-assed on me, got three officers to go into my cell and pack out my stuff. Made a big show of it, I hear: high drama for the unit. When they finally let me go, they told me not to tell anyone about what happened.”
“Did you tell them about Mr. Herman and the copper wire?”
Basking in Dan's attention, I felt the last of my anger drain away, and hitched my ass up onto the corner of his desk, looking down at him. “Hell no, I didn't tell them. They were only interested in their witch-hunt. I'll let Sabrina and Mr. Lewis deal with all that. Not my business.”
I stood. “Hey, I gotta get set up for the movie. Unlock the supply door so I can get the VCR?”
Dan's bundle of keys jingled as he hiked himself out of his chair, and I covertly admired the contraction of his quadriceps beneath the BOP-issued uniform shorts. He opened the door, and stood aside for me to enter.
Walking to the shelf, I stood on tip-toes, grabbing for the VCR on the metal supply racks. It was too far back for me to get a handle on, and as I groped, arms above my head, I felt Dan behind me. His abdomen pushed against my back as he reached with both arms around me for the VCR. I froze in position, and again my heart pounded in my temples as I waited for him to move away.
I felt his breath in my ear, and slumped forward as my knees gave out, grasping the shelf above my head. He inched a bit closer, making full body contact and whispered, “I'll get you GI Jane tonight, Jennifer. You'll like that movie.”
Not trusting my voice, I ducked under his upraised arm, walking out of the supply closet, out of recreation and onto the compound. I needed to put my cell back together before 4:00 PM count.
I wasn't leaving prison anytime soon.
