I've had Charlie here this morning to 'fix' my PC. After explaining to him the issues that I've had with my power switch, he went on to take out my graphics card.
First of all he told me that the graphics card needed replacing, this was going to cost me about £80, then quite quickly he realised that the graphics card was fine.
I asked him to check the switch, because that's why I called him out, I KNOW the switch is broken.
Then Charlie decided that it was the power supply that needed replacing and said he will order me one and come and fit it next week and that I was lucky because they are a lot cheaper than the graphics cards....failing that it was my motherboard and then I would be in big trouble.
After Charlie had left, I fiddled with the switch again and turned my computer on.
I'm not having any more work done and if I can't do it myself, it just won't get done, because it doesn't get done, even when I get it done, I just get screwed.
Thank you for reading my blog.

Sorry I don't live nearer to you and could have helped out.
I do that for a lot of friends. They buy any parts that are truly broken or they want upgraded and I donate my time, since they are friends. Sometimes they give me a few cookies.
You need a computer friend.
There is a difference in power supplies - the AT supplies had the power switch right on the power supply - sometimes on the front of the case but connected by a thick wire to the supply.
The newer ATX power supplies connect to the main board. Then a tiny wire on a different area of the mainboard connects to the switch on the front of the case. If that wire is not firmly connected or the switch fails, it is easier to replace as long as there is a true computer parts place near you.
Commercial computer repair places are sometimes like car repair places. They need more income so they convince you that other things are "broken". Sad.
I wish you luck in finding a different repair place.

I'm suprised he didn't tell you the windshield wipers on your monitor needed replacement so the power switch could find it's way to the wall outlet.

I wonder if those repairfolks have to take a course in screwing or if it just comes naturally
Computers should come installed with little diagnostic nanobots so they can fix themselves....LOL

I guess the phrase "being a proper Charlie" really means something after all. What a dickhead! I hope no money exchanged hands. If it did, I'm with asnet, find him something foolproof to do to earn his money, like sweep the drive. If he can find it without you having to draw him a map .... - Jeez, men never cease to amaze me!

Ain't that the way,,,,,
when a man can't get you to turn on, he assumes it is some major problem with your equipment. In truth, he just doesn't know how to fiddle the switches or even listen to the smallest of instructions about how the switches operate on your particular model.
