Today is Canada's birthday....marking the anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 1867 and the birth of Canada as a nation.
Before 1982 Canada Day had been known as Dominion Day, First of July, Confederation Day, and July the First.
Canada Day celebrates the events that occurred on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. The BNA Act proclaimed "one Dominion under the name of Canada," hence the original title of the holiday, "Dominion Day." Dominion Day was officially renamed "Canada Day" by an Act of Parliament on October 27, 1982. This change reflected the policy of successive governments to down play Canada's colonial origins.
The Canadian Fathers of Confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian Confederation.
Only four provinces - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec - were included in Confederation at the beginning on July 1, 1867. Now Canada has 10 provinces and three territories.
Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on July 1, 1867. Not only was he a Father of Confederation, he drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the British North America Act creating the Dominion of Canada.
O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ô Canada! Terre de nos aïeux, Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée, Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée, Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
When I lived in Florida, I once saw a bumper sticker that said "Happiness is a New Yorker headed north, with a Canadian under each arm"
