I went to the local pub last night, it was a good reminder of why I never bother going there anymore. I’m not sure what it is about my left shoulder, but this guy kept tapping it to get my attention and he didn’t even have anything remotely interesting to say amongst his drunken drivel.

When Leyton arrived he assumed we were a party of six, he brought two bottles of Piper and six glasses, one of which was for the shoulder tapper; I was mortified and asked Leyton to return one glass to the bar.

I already knew that red wine and beer don’t mix, so I’m not sure why I mixed Champagne with them both last night. I suppose that is and will always be one of life’s great mysteries.

I’ve been to mum’s today to help her with her new laptop, she’s struggling with things like the send and shut down buttons disappearing all the time. The printer is wonderful, she just wishes she didn’t have to use the laptop with it. I explain that the printer is no good on it’s own.

Did you know that you can “zap” emails and things? If my mother doesn’t want it on her screen, that’s what she does to it, she zaps it.

Mum handed me a jar to bring home and I asked her what it was.

‘’Chilli and Sweet Pepper of course!’’ came her reply.

Well of course it was, I looked again and sure enough, that’s what it said on the label, Chilli and Sweet Pepper.

‘’Chilli and Sweet Pepper what Mum?’’

It turns out to be sauce, but it doesn’t say that on the label.

‘’Sauce for what Mum?’’

I really shouldn’t have asked this question, because even if I knew what the sauce was for, I had no idea what I was supposed to do with it. After asking what it was for my mother must have thought I was a snadwich short of a picnic, extremely ungrateful, and surely I was pulling her leg, she looked at me disapprovingly over her glasses as she went on to carefully explain what the sauce was for and what to do with the contents of the jar.

‘’Within this jar misschoos, there is a mysterious substance which is a tomato based sauce, flavoured with chilli and sweet pepper. What you do with this sauce is- Heat it up and pour it over pasta and there you have it, pasta with tomato sauce. ‘’

How was I supposed to know this when I have never bought a jar of sauce in my life? I’ve brought it home and it will sit in the cupboard, where it will stay until it goes past it’s use by date, at which point it will be removed.

We spent the afternoon sorting through my father’s watercolour paintings, trying to choose one to get framed as a gift for my daughter. It’s strange, looking at these paintings, which are really quite spectacular, it’s a big part of him that he’s left behind.

I brought the collection home with me for my daughter to choose one for herself and as we looked through them all, we found a painting that I had never seen before. It’s a landscape, the colours are most unusual, there are a lot of pinks, but what stands out in this painting is a lighthouse, but there isn’t any water. We’ll get this one framed, every time I look at it, I like it more and more, if that’s possible.

A lot of these paintings are unfinished, some are just practice washes, yet even the incomplete ones are nice, they will never be framed, but they’re all about him.

I do not understand why our mothers insist on giving us "stuff" they know we don't care for and insisting that we do.

Going through your father's paintings must have brought much joy to all of you. I come from artistic people and their work keeps them alive for us. It's nice for your daughter to have this.

If my mom visits and "borrows" things like Vids she likes it's really her way of telling me that I just gave it to her. Hey I wouldn't even be here if it weren't for her so I really don't mind. to moms everywhere

Shoulder tappers are about as much fun as watching a nodding dog.

You could always wait for the date to expire on the jar of sauce, and then send it to him...?

Just trying to help .....
