I guess I have always believed in miracles, but haven't really experienced one first hand in a while. Oh, I've had some really major blessings, but this past Thursday, I was witness to a true miracle. On Wednesday afternoon, I was lollygagging around the house taking advantage of one of the few days I've had during the summer vacation when I had no demands on me at all. Then I got a phone call from my son that would change my life. My daughter in law was in labor at 25 weeks. I jumped in my car with only the clothes on my back and made the 60 miles to the hospital in less than 45 minutes. The doctors tried every resource in the book to stop the contractions, but at 12:57 am on July 3rd, Christopher made his way into this world via C-section. He was breech and not breathing when he was born. The doctors stopped in the hallway on the way to NICU so that my son and I could see him. There only comment was "he's just too little". After almost 2 hours, we finally got word that he was alive and we could see him. I've never seen a baby that tiny. He weighed 1 lb. 13 oz. My son was called back to recovery with his wife and I was left in the NICU with my new grandson. He was so tiny, but so perfect. I asked his nurse lots of questions and she was so patient explaining to me about all the tubes and machines. God bless those special people! She also told me that the only thing he was having a problem with was breathing and he was doing fine with the help of the ventolator. As I looked at him and gently touched his tiny feet and hands, I knew that I was witnessing a miracle. Babies that small just don't happen without major health issues...or at least that was what I thought. They had left the tape measure in his isolette and I couldn't resist measuring his little foot which seemed really large for his tiny body. It was 1.5 inches long. His daddy had big feet when he was born! His little leg was the size of my index finger, but he had fingernails and toenails and even some fuzzy hair on his little head. I have spent the past few days being thankful for the little things in life. My daughter in law's birthday was July 4th and she said she never expected such a wonderful birthday surprise. My 5 year old grandson described his little brother as "pwecious, gorgeous and adorable". In fact he said he was almost as cute as Marley, their dog! When my daughter in law went into labor, I asked God to please hold this little one in the palm of his hand. After that, I never stopped believing that he would be ok. I do realize that there may be some setbacks, actually there probably will be some setbacks, but I know that this little miracle was sent here for a reason. Little Christopher is small enough to fit in a human hand and I know God has him in His. I am actually spending the night at home tonight (I'll go back tomorrow!) and I just got the report from my son. Little Christopher is breathing on his own with only minimal help from the ventilator and everything else is in the normal range. They sedated him because he kept kicking so much he was using all his energy, but all is well. It is minute by minute, but Christopher is proving to the world that you don't have to be big to be tough. Please pray for our little miracle. He has a lot to do in his lifetime.
