Arachnids Who Play Opossum
Another Mder posted a blog today regarding dead creepy-crawlies, this was written in response to her blog.
Hey --------, just an FYI, the next time you find a creature you think is dead, PUT SOMETHING OVER IT!! This is why....
About six years ago my daughter and I were working in the same medical complex (I had worked there about five years by this time). One day she was in my office holding a specimen cup (ya know, the kind you pee in at the doctors office) with a HUGE 'dead' spider in it. She had been showing it to her co-workers, couldn't believe how big it was even after she had 'killed' it and it had curled up. I need to make something VERY clear, she KNEW better than to show it to her mom (I have a horrible phobia when it comes to spiders, can't even bring myself to look at pictures of them.)
Well, as mothers and daughters do, we got to talking, and suddenly she screams and throws the cup across the room "MOM!!" she screams, "MOM, did you SEE that?"
"No sweetie, what's wrong?" (By this time she has tears in her eyes and is shaking, NOT like her at all!)
"GO LOOK AT THE CUP!" she cries.
Now, under normal circumstances I would never, ever approach a spider (even a dead one) but this was my daughter freaking out, so I had to suck it up and be 'The Mom'. With much trepidation, I slowly walked across the room (with my daughter hiding behind me, looking over my shoulder) and bent down to look at the previously 'deceased' arachnid. Sure enough, that monstrosity (it was now as wide as the specimen cup) was STANDING UP (albeit on four legs now) STARING RIGHT BACK AT ME!! Well, I have to admit to letting loose a VERY girlie scream while pushing my daughter backwards across the room!!
Needless to say, my scream brought the whole staff running into my office (I'm usually very quiet, up to that point they had not so much as heard me raise my voice). Now EVERYONE was freaking out since most of them had seen the 'dead' version of our nemesis. No one there had ever witnessed a spider that played 'opossum' before!
By the end of the day there wasn't a soul within a mile of that place who would ever again take for granted that a spider or bug was 'deceased' just because it was all curled up.

I DO NOT do spiders bigger than a dime.....and even if they look dead they still get the raid and a swat with Skin's shoe....his are bigger than mine lol....and YES I make him do it if he is home and then I verify it is dead before he flushes it.

Guess I'm one of the few who would "catch & release" the huge spider outside. Then again, around here I have more of a problem with mosquitoes trying to suck my blood while leaving red, swollen & itchy marks on my skin than with a creature who spins intricate webs in hopes of catching a few of those pesty blood suckers.

Yeah, I know, I'm usually a softie when it comes to critters too. I've taken sooooo many pics of spider webs over the years, truly things of beauty (especially when outlined by the morning dew).

Who was that masked blogger? Where did she come from? She should definitely blog again My next request is for a horseback riding adventure, wonder if you could come up with one of those?
I do not like spider bites at all...but am very respectful of the spidey who makes all those beautiful webs...may we all stay on our own side of the line. Don't crawl on me...EEWWWWWW!!!!
