I went to the NEW Zoo today with one of my girlfriends. Well let me tell you, it was a waste of the gas it took to drive up there. There wasn't hardly anything there. And the animals that were there seemed depressed and very unhappy. There were plastic pet carriers in the enclosures. Since when does that belong in a "natural" habitat. I understand that yes, the enclosures are meant to to imitate nature, but pet carriers?! Come on! The giraffe enclosure had like no grass for the giraffes. The lion enclosure was right next to the giraffe enclosure, so the lion was acting all goofy and the giraffe was eating the grass that was in the lion's enclosure that was growing long into their enclosure. Basically it was a ghetto zoo. There were no elephants, and in the penguin enclosure there was 4 penguins and like 20 ducks. And the enclosures look like they haven't been cleaned in two weeks. We got through the zoo in less than an hour. That zoo owes me $10 for the damn admission AND gas money! Bastards! So we left and went back to Sloshkosh to hit her apartment to put away the munchies we brought for the road trip. Then we went to the Menominee Park Zoo. That zoo is totally free and had waaay better exhibits, eventhough we were there for a half hour-forty five minutes. The animals at the MPZ looked way happier and more lively than the NEW Zoo. The NEW Zoo bummed me out. :( We should have went to Madison Zoo, or the Milwaukee Zoo even. But all in all it was a fun day and I am exhausted.

I like giraffes .,if i were the richest man on earth i would buy all the zoos and take the creatures back to there natural habitat and release them.,they would be happy again i remember putting peanuts in the end of an elephants truck.,then he would eat them and put the truck back at me for more.,i just kept wondering if he just wanted to go home again .,but if the animal is happy there then ok.,but if not.,well,.,.,,.................................

sounds like a good end of your day tho

*sigh*

Is it really any wonder why animals in cages aren't happy?...just sayin.

I don't like zoos, and haven't been to one in over 30 years. They make me sad and angry.

Ok I will bite on this blog. First, you have broght forwath a typical 20th centry problem.

1. Money to operate.
2. waste of money
3. poor quality of management and planning.

Most zoos operate on a tight budget. It cost to feed these animals every day the quality of food they need.

I do have a suggestion, take the management and put them in an inclosure such as an apartment with glass sides-be able to see how they function on a minute by minute time schedule. Use a 3 month time and put it up down town central station. Yep where everyone can veiw and call it primate Human.

I've always loved the Milwakee Zoo it took us ages to go thru the whole place. Where is the New Zoo? I always wanted to get a job working at the zoo when I was young since I love wildlife. Its sad that the animals seemed depressed, maybe you could write to someone and tell them of your experience, find out who runs the board for that zoo, tell them if you experienced that I am sure everyone else does too. You Could make a difference. Doesn't hurt to try. tc Lost

Last year, I managed to visit three zoos in California (Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Diego). Of the three, I loved the San Diego one the most, and the Sacramento one the least.

The Sac zoo was not just a poor excuse for a zoo, it was heartbreaking. The giraffe enclosure was completely barren, with only a small strip of ground between the sleeping stalls and the moat. The giraffes were reaching over the walls of the enclosure, trying to eat the leaves on trees. (Apparently, they feed the giraffes a leafy-shake. Not even real leaves, just the stuff they pureed up into a shake...)

I passed a monkey sitting alone in its cage. The monkey had picked up a twig, and was poking itself again and again in the stomach. Over and over again, eyes glazed over, staring off into the distance.

It was awful, simply awful. Especially in constrast to the SF zoo, which I visited the next day. They provided generally bigger enclosures, they provided enrichment items (toys, puzzles, different ways the animals would have to think), they provided better food.

There was a program on Animal Planet called "Ultimate Zoos." In it, they talked about how zoos around the world tackled the problem of creating a natural-seeming environment for their wildlife. A wonderful series, which I hope will someday be released on DVD...
