"I said something the other day down in Georgia, and the Republicans jumped on this. I said, you know, absolutely immigrants need to learn English, but we also need to learn foreign languages," he said here Friday. "...I don't speak a foreign language. It's embarrassing!"

This is true, but you didn't finish the rest of his speach. I saw this speach and he went on to say that other countries know English and our country does not know other languages as he continued to explain his point. The truth is, many countries do know English while many do not. As I keep saying, we have the classes if people want to take them and they are required courses. So I still don't know what the fuss is all about or Obama's point is? What does he want to do? Make a law now that everyone has to learn a new language or what? Seems the school systems are doing all they can, it's in the curriculum all we have to do is learn if we want.(and yes there are adult classes for the parents). tc Lost

He said it's embarrasing that Americans can't speak french in a joking manner. The speech in now way states seriously that America is embarassing, The way he put it it is embarassing.

I didn't hear the speech...
...it is useful and educational to have a basic understanding of a different language to your mother tongue, whatever country you live in, even if you never learn to speak it fluently.
Spanish is the most widely spoken language and probably the most useful for everyone to learn at the moment, especially in the business world.
