Well folks...the lightning bugs are out in full force and the locusts are singing loud and strong...and summer is moving far too fast to suit me. We've passed the peak and now the days grow shorter. I have to hurry now if I want to mow my yard after the sun goes down. The cherries on my tree are past their prime and a few leaves on that tree are turning yellow. On my walks I see the weeds coming into their fullness and drying out.
I measure seasons by events of nature. In spring comes the bugs and the first "event" is June bugs...they've arrived earlier than usual the past couple of years or so. Next is lightning bugs...to me the first real sign of summer. They are followed by locusts...or cicadas as some call them. It is said that it is six weeks to the first frost from the first singing of the locust. I haven't seen that to be true and that is good because I think their arrival has been earlier the past few years.
This has been a good spring and summer season for me. Although there was a lot of rain early on, summer is here and so far it hasn't been a hot one...here anyway. My night walking is pleasant beyond words and days with the windows open bring summer smells drifting in on the warm breezes...flowers, new mown grass and often someone cooking on the grill. Morning breezes brings the smell of coffee and bacon.
Summer is going too fast..how do I know? Already the stores are displaying back to school supplies...and fall clothing. Commercialism runs rampant as seasonal items appear earlier and earlier each year. By Sept. Wal-Mart will have Halloween displays beginning to sprinkle their isles. By August the craft departments will start being filled with fall decorations with Christmas woven in here and there. It's bad enough that now we are being pummeled with "Christmas in July"....geez!
So here's hoping all my friends here are enjoying summer '08 as is dwindles. Absorb it, wallow in it, extract from it the best it has to offer. Feel the sun on your faces and the breezes on your back and fill it with friends and family and make happy memories.
Summer
Evergreens and wheat fields, sparrows outside my pane, dusty whirls ghostly swirls running down my lane. Breezes softly calling, ruffle through the trees, dancing branches dropping summer dried leaves. The rustle of the grasses, the harvest of the wheat, rays of glaring sunshine glimmer in the heat. Nighttime frogs are singing, insects voices long, they trill and twitter loudly, cacophony of song. Full moon rises slowly, orange before its light, so bright to cast it's shadows of critters of the night. Summer in its fullness, overflows in rich display as days begin to dwindle, she'll soon go away. 'Til Autumn comes a'calling, I'll languish in the sun, run barefoot through dried grasses enjoying summer fun.
