Ode to Big Black Dog

Ev'ry night at the home she could see me arrive.
She stood two foot two and weighed eighty five.
Kinda broad at the shoulder and broad at the hip
And the other dogs knew ya didn't give no lip to Big Dog.

Nobody seemed to know where Princess called home.
She just drifted around the house and stayed all alone.
She didn't bark much, kinda quiet and shy,
But she’d bring you a toy if you just said "Hi" to Big Dog.

Somebody said she was a Labrador Retriever,
Others thought she was cut with a Pit Bull Terrier
Her massive jaws could eat a steel can
Which sent the collie cryin’ to Mama’s hand- Big Dog

Then came the day that Daddy lost his mind
When chair smashed, and Mama started cryin’
The dogs were whimpering, and the cats moved fast
And everybody thought that they’d breath their last-‘cept Dog

Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell,
Daddy grabbed a pack of Benedryll Daddy swallowed twelve;
Mama just sat there and counted on
And like a giant foot stool she just stood there alone-Big Dog

And with all of her strength she nipped and bit
“Come on Daddy, snap out of it!”
The ambulance rescued Daddy from a would-be grave
Daddy didn’t think about his puppy, so who’s there to save-Big Dog

As her Daddy was locked away, safe and sound,
Heartbreak overcame that pup from the pound
With a massive heart attack, it was her time
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big Dog

Now Daddy won’t forget his beautiful Pit;
He framed her picture and put some words in front of it
These few words are written on that frame
“Your death was a big, big, shame, Big Dog”
