..Shakespeare was Married at 18..
He left Stratford on Avon .a wife and 3 children ..to go to London
to pursue his acting Career..in1592
He was a member of an Actors group .."The Lord Chamberlains men.
They put on plays in the first Purpose built Theatre in Britain in Shoreditch .[east end]and away from interference from the "City fathers..!
in those times actors played wherever they could .. build a stage ,, in Market squares ..or the yards of an Inn.As they had no permanent base, the authorities thought of them as Vagabonds and Undesirables..
In the time odf The Plague . they were afraid the crowds would spread Infection ,or become Mobs .,,and instigate ,,"insurrection ..:)!!???
~~~
in 1576 ..a Mr james Burbage , erected The
Theatre"where shakespeare began his early career as actor and Playwright.Crowds gathered for the Novel experience..of watching players perform .They ran into Financial difficultities so his sons,,Cuthbert Burbage..dismantled the theatre and trundled it accross LONDON Bridge ,over the Frozen River Thames .. --to /southwark , in 1599.. that was the first "Globe theatre.. -This area was known as a centre for Entertainment,,in 16 th century..long alleys , muddy streets , inns and Taverns..
Bear Pits and Bawdy houses...:)
The bard had a house there , the area was owned by Bishop of Winchester,, known as .."The Liberty of the Clink"!!
Another Theatre ,known as "The Rose was opened by Philip Henslowe..and here Shakespeare performed in "Henry V1.in 1592---------in Newington , they did "Taming of the Shrew" and "Hamlet--1594.but the Globe was the most important-- performing."Macbeth,King Lear and The Tempest---the "groundlings stood..in open space ,,the Wealthy had a seat ! Elizabeth 1st attended [also went to nearby Bear Pits ..:(
Shakespeare worshipped in a local church .St Saviours..[now Southwark Cathedral records show shakespeare paid for an expensive Funeral there ..for his younger brother..1607.[christophr Marlowe and Ben Johnson were also playwrights
at this time]--edmond shakespeare s tomb is in front stalls @sothwark , with other playwrights.[massinger and Fletcher] shakespeare caroused in local Inns , ieThe "Queens Head.owned by RobertHarvard.whos father was christened at st Saviours,, and was ,,Founder of HARVARD UNIVersity .one of Americas foremost Uni s .
in 1613 Globe was destroyed by fire..during a performance of "HENRY 8th..a canon was fired and sparks ,lit the Thatch ..in his 40 s shakespeare retired a rich man , to Stratford,where he lived his last 20 yr
..A NEW GLOBE Theatre as a MEMOrial..was built by Sam WannamakerCBE..American.actor/director in 1997 .. so the show .."goes on". a statue of Shakespeare outside sothwark cathedral .has a view of the Globe,,its flag flying ..
~~~~~~historically~~~~~Authentic shakespeare performances are performed all Summer....Well worth a Visit ..
..Keep shakespeare ..Alive!!!!

Thank you for that bit of history about one of my favourites! I adore Shakespeare. Many of the names you mention in your blog are familiar to me from the movie Shakespeare in Love.

Glad to hear London hasn't changed much since then. I think I bin in those pubs you mention "whether 'tis nobler of the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or take arms against a sea of troubles..."

I nearly drowned in a couple of 'em too Kudos !
