When I was a wee one…my Mother picked out & bought a PINK Cadillac…the one with the gargantuan fins and large red pointy tail lights. The wheel wells were covered & painted pink to match the car's exterior….except for showing about 5” of Gangster whitewalls beneath. The interior was flashy Pink satin brocade covered with a heavy clear vinyl. Embossed into the vinyl was regal 1” crests. Hence when we all rode in the car wearing shorts, everyone exited the car with red 1” Cadillac crests imprinted on their Legs. My 2 teenage sisters thought this was deplorable. But me being a youngster, I sported the imprints... showing them off to the other kids like ultra-cool brands. That is, until they wore off. Occasionally Mom would drive us to school and when she pulled up in front of the High School, I notice that my embarrassed older sisters were laying down, plastered to the floorboard hiding & begging Mom to pull around the corner. They didn’t know that later…Boss Bruce Springsteen would record a popular song that would make the pink car an Icon!

Now my Father was THE Captain of a large Ship…a whopping football field in length and the hauling capacity: 50,000 tons of cargo. He was an imposing figure at 6’3 and weighing out at 250. When he marched down the deck in his navy Captain's Blazer with 4 gold stripes on each sleeve…there was NO doubt who the Master of the ship was. He was feared and revered. He sailed 9 months a year depending on when the Great Lakes froze & he came home intermittently. He was well aware of my Mother’s auto purchase because they had discussed it and agreed. BUT the color was a blank because in our household…you WENT FOR THE DEAL…

On this occasion, Dad came into port unexpectedly. My Mom hurriedly dressed up and ditty-bopped her happy self down to the docks.. parking the PINK Cadillac in the most obtrusive spot she could find….a place where everyone in the whole shipyard could ogle this fine work of pink art. It gleamed in the sunlight….long and slinky and PINK. By the time my Father climbed down the gangplank, walked the long dock & reached the car..he was so red in the face, that my Mother was concerned for his health. It had never occurred to her…that the color of the car would embarrass an ultra masculine Sailor…

When he slid behind the wheel…he was "almost" beyond words. But he did manage to let out a barrage of language that would make any sailor look mild..My Mother quietly waited until he finished the lengthy tirade. Then, in her calmest demeanor…she explained how she had gotten the deal of the century…they had gotten a brand spanking new Cadillac for JUST half of the list price and that the Dealership had thrown in an extra year of free maintenance…and my Father started to calm himself…She further explained that they had given her the best trade-in on their old Bonneville...etcetera etcetera.. and he was almost pacified… And the Last thing she said made my Father’s Stars line up with hers..in perfect harmony……..”and oh, George…by the way…this car is not PINK according to “The Cadillac Company”…It is refered to as DESERT ROSE….it is printed right on the outside sticker…”

With that, my contented Father varooomed the Desert Rose Cadillac to a roaring start and made a fabulous FLYING exit..pointy red fins, crested vinyl, and all.

I love it! My dad being a commander in the navy, I remember a similar experience, except the car was a Olds and lime green!
