You receive an email from a lady from Goodwater, Alabama ... duhh-h-h where's that? Well, it is a little village with predominantly Creek Indian residents, southeast of Sylacauga in the northeast Alabama hill country. She has a master's degree - her profile shows that she has traveled in other countries - is a volunteer for something. The photos look right. Her profile says she is mixed heritage and the lady in the photo certainly looks like someone of mixed Caucasian and Creek Indian - like you would find around Sylacauga. She's a well-educated Southern Belle from a small community - not hardened like the northside Atlanta gals ... at least it would make an interesting penpal. Adebola is certainly an unusal name for an Alabama belle, though.

I write back. She explains that she is actually a Peace Corps volunteer in a village in western Nigeria. She runs an orphanage and hospital. The photos certainly look like she is working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa. I asked her which university she graduated from in Alabama. She responded that she went to Harvard University in Alabama. Something was not right about her English, either. It wasn't as stiff as those ten zillion letters we guys get each day from Russia and China, but its grammar and spelling were not what one would normally find from a college graduate in Alabama. Then she suggests that I write her on her regular email address, which is a Yahoo.uk address. Why would an American in Nigeria use a UK email address.

Let me guess, the letters would lead to her request that I donate money to her hospital. The writer is a Nigerian living in England. We will see how well this Nigerian in England knows the geography of the USA! By the way, apples do NOT grow on the Gulf Coast and they ripen in the Fall. Goodwater is actually about 200 miles from the coast. There is NEVER enough snow anywhere in Alabama to ski upon.
