117 cats, raccoon, and rabbit found at Omaha home Wed Jul 23, 7:26 PM ET

Humane society workers have found 117 cats, a raccoon and a rabbit in a north Omaha house. The discovery came Wednesday after Council Bluffs, Iowa, police caught the 54-year-old woman who lives at the house reportedly stealing cat food. Officials say she smelled like cat urine.

It isn't the first time the woman has been in trouble for having too many cats. At one time the humane society pulled more than 200 cats from her house.

Many of the cats taken Wednesday were sick and the floor was covered in feces. Some of the cats were dead.

The woman faces possible citations for cruelty to animals and other charges.

This woman is obviously a collector and is mentally ill. In her mind and perhaps initially, she was helping cats that had been abandoned or abused. In all likelihood, she has neither the financial means nor hours in the day (your average zoo workers doesn't have this many charges) to do the job properly.

I always feel bad for people like that...you know that they really do mean to do well in their own minds, however they are putting these poor animals in danger by not properly taking care of them. Breaks my heart to see an animal suffering.
I'm lucky my cat I have now was just abandoned in a carrier in a building..I suppose the person knew someone would come along and care for it.

I have been in more homes like this than I care to count in the past. She is a hoarder who probably started out helping one or two cats and it got way out of hand. Where she went wrong was in not seeking help ealier and in continuing after she has already had the first group removed. I am curious as to why the humane society involved allowed it to get this bad again....they should have been keeping an eye on her. There are way too many unwanted cats out there, roaming free and in shelters. SPAY AND NEUTER....IT'S THE KINDEST CUT OF ALL....

tabernac....

I just can't get over that. It's like at first they are trying to help the animals then it gets to be too much for them and they are overwhelmed...What a shame...I am sure the people that do this have good intentions at first!

this is so sad...the cat I have now came from a sisuation much like this. Mazie was in a home with 16 other cats and the woman died; was in the house for several days before any one went in and found them..I've had her for a couple weeks and she's still acting a little insecure but geting better.went a little over a week before I could get her to eat even , was that trumaatized by everything that had happened. I have a very special friend here that has been a big help and suportive. (you're the best Maggie). I just put pictures of her on my profile, she's a pertty& sweet natured girl concidering all she's been thru.
