Read an article this morning on the ban of concealed weapons in national parks. Some people are trying to overturn that law and allow people to carry these weapons into these parks. Now I am all for the rights of individuals to carry their guns. I don't carry a gun but the US Constitution says those who want too can. I did lots of firing weapons during 20 years in the military and now I stick to shooting ranges.

However, I don't see why it would be necessary or practical to carry a gun at a national park where lots of people go. You just know that some people are going to think it is safe and start shooting at animals, cans, trees or whatever. Lots of drinking happens in these parks and that is all we need is some drunk walking around the woods carrying a loaded weapon. With thousands of people walking around that you can't see, too much can go wrong. So maybe lifting the ban on these weapons in parks is not such a good idea. Only more bad things can happen then good as a result of it. Next thing you know they will try to lift the ban on weapons not being allowed in concerts or sporting events.

My only reason for wanting to carry a gun in the national parks would be to scare off a grizzly or mountain lion if I had too. Now, they were trying to do the same thing in Disneyland, now there's no animal danger there.

Remember very few legal guns kill people. then add in the govt factor, where they never stop trying to take guns rights away.

You just know that some people are going to think it is safe and start shooting at animals, cans, trees or whatever.

Don't feel alone. There are lots of very misinformed people that imagine this would happen. However, licensed CCW holders are likely the most sane, safe and lawabiding people in this country (or they'd never get the permit). When the CCW permits themselves first were discussed, the same misinformed people would scream bloody murder "it'll be the wild west again...there will be gunfights in the bars...nobody will ever be safe aagin...let's do it for the children" LOL.

You should worry more about being eaten by a bear in the parks or trying to figure out how many 4 leaf clovers there are in the average 1 acre lawn than worrying about a licensed CCW holder The facts and figures of CCW safety are undeniable.

Gman - I agree that most people who carry concealed weapons are really responsible. However, not all are and many of them like to drink also. I don't think it would be wise to have someone drunk with a weapon in an area that is a forrest. All it takes is one shot. Even if that shot does not hit anyone, imagine the panic it will cause throughout the park. That one shot will echo throughout the park and people will freak. So yes, most people who carry concealed weapons are responsible. I just don't think it is such a good idea to have one in a park. Yosemite is huge with thousands of people in it everyday. Imagine what all those people would do if they heard a gun shot in the forest.

Remember very few legal guns kill people.

Very few legal guns kill intentionally. Accidental shootings are epidimic and most of them are legal guns, at least statisticly, since illegal guns are seldom reported to have been accidentally discharged. My own anecdotal evidence suggests many more people are killed by their own guns than by those illegal ones. Carrying guns should be limited to tested and lisenced individuals. The constitutional right to carry arms isn't the right for ANYONE to do so. People who've committed felonies are restricted for a certain number of years after they've been released from jail. Restricting fools should be the next step. We test drivers to see if they're fools. Why not wannabe gun owners? I own a gun and use it safely as do most gun owners but there are a minority who should never be given this serious right. The NRA needs to recognize this fact.

The NRA needs to recognize this fact.

NRA DOES recognize that fact...in fact for years they've harped on it. For years, they've tried to address that very issue. Trouble is, those who would ban or severely restrict gun ownership of law abiding citizens fight NRA every step of the way, using statistics of crimes commited by felons and others ALREADY not allowed to posess firearms as justification for banning ALL citizens from owning firearms.

The NRA's stance has been consistant for many years...

1) Criminals should be treated like criminals, not like poor misunderstood innocents as they often are now....

2) Commision of a crime using a firearm should be a serious felony in and of itself, with a seperate, non negotiable prison sentence...again, this is largely opposed by liberals...

3) Nothing concerning the lives of law abiding citizens, including firearms ownership, should in any way be dictated by the actions of the criminals & preditors...

Folks might be surprised if they took the time to see what NRA actually does stand for and what they believe in for themselves, rather than depending on a largly negatively biased media for their opinions...

This is completely confused, confusing and absurd.

a) Is it now legal to bring an un-concealed weapon into the national parks
to hunt or hold as a defensive weapon against hostile wild animals or people?

b) who is behind the campaign to allow concealed weapons in the parks?

c) Are current laws against concealed or unconcealed weapons in the parks enforced? If so, where are the enforcement and prosecution statistics?

d) How many accidental gunshot wounds and deaths are there in the parks each year?

A child was killed by a black bear in a Tennessee park just last year. This incident occured as the childs mother and sibling watched in horror, helpless to do anything. This type of incident is the result of anti- gun laws in America (thank you mrs Brady). Had there been a person nearby carrying a firearm this child would be alive today. When will these anti- gun idiots realize that the police, park rangers, etc can not be everywhere at the same time to protect people. Our personal safety is our own responsibility, and here in this supposedly free country we are supposed to have the right to defend ourselves. I would much rather contend with some drunken fool shooting a beer can once or twice a year, than to have a myself or a member of my family mauled by a wild animal.

asnet - The only thing confusing to me is your comment. I am not sure what you are trying to get at.

I would much rather contend with some drunken fool shooting a beer can once or twice a year, than to have a myself or a member of my family mauled by a wild animal.

hereshannon - I guess with this way of thinking then people who go to the beach should take harpoons since sharks have attacked people along the coasts in the water.

People, I am all for the right to carry arms. I just believe there should be some places where it shouldn't happen. National Parks is one, but also airplanes, concerts, sporting events, bars, etc. The last thing you need is for people to start shootouts in these places. Could you imagine if one person on a plane pulled out a gun in which everyone on board is carrying a gun? A plane is the last place you want a shootout in. I believe in the rights of this country and I truely believe in freedom of speech. Saying that, I also agree it is wrong to yell fire in a crowded theater.

The animal attack is a weak argument if you ask me. Animal attacks are so low in number, especially if you compare it to accidental shootings. People are a lot more dangerous than any animal is.

Has there been a great deal of study done before this law has been decided upon? If so, and we have the right to have guns then who has the right so say it cannot be, the law is the law? Personally, I have a gun and will bring it with me on a trip no matter where I go and I have that right to keep my family safe. It's sad that it has come to this with all the idiots out in the world. I choose not to be a statistic of those killed while on a family outing or trip tyvm if I can avoid it. Even having a gun doesn't guarantee that 100% either but you have a better chance of surviving animal or person if attacked. tc Lost

Areas where no guns are allowed are also called kill zones.

Everytime these laws have been rolled back and the rightful freedom of the law abiding has been restored we have seen these emotional, senseless even hysterical claims of 'streets awash in bloodshed' and it hasn't happened. Strangely these laws don't prevent the murderers from bringing deadly weapons of many types to the parks to commit these crimes with.

Maybe a sign would stop them.

There have been a large number of murders in the National parks of many Country's including countries that don't allow private gun ownership. Canada, Australia to name two places and serial killers know that the young people camping there will be unarmed.

It wasn't too long ago that a number of illegal pot farms and drug processing factories where discovered in national parks. Guarded by people with fully automatic AKs, the ones that can't be imported or owned in the U.S. and grenades etc, set up booby traps and in general posed a massive threat to any hapless hiker or camper that happened down the wrong trail.

Even if you are able to call for help you may be hours or even days from getting any so anything you have to protect yourself and your companions will be something you need to live.
