It's official - I had my birthday and now I'm old enough to collect my retirement at age 62. Yes people, I have reached that age. It was kind of dismal at first, but then I found all these senior discounts, and things are looking better.
It seems when you retire there's just a whole new set of friends out there. There are new social areas to explore. I have discovered I can go to McD's for breakfast, enjoy their big screen tv, and have small talk with the seniors of the community.
I did discover that I have to break one of my bad habits. Whenever I get frustrated with a senior, I have to restrain myself from referring to them as "old farts" now. I know that's not nice anyway, but as an example, I was waiting in line for my turn to buy gas the other day, sitting behind a motorcycle gassing up, and this senior guy pulled his old pickup truck up and ordered me to move - then he took my spot! I really did not want to move, and he had no right to butt in from the opposite direction, but I figured he was an "old fart" and just left the station to calm down.
I've started doing the word search puzzles, and have my favorite morning tv programs. Yes, I've drifted into the senior routine very well. My one son called me the other day to check on me. He said it was announced on tv to check on the elderly! He asked if I had my air conditioner going in the heat, and whether I was staying indoors and drinking plenty of water. I'm only 62, not what I would consider "elderly". As my family always said, "there may be snow on the roof, but there's still fire in the furnace!"
Anyway, I'm enjoying the retirement scene and having other seniors refer to me as the "young-n" feels good. My aunt lives in a retirement community, and the residents there have already offered me membership into their activities despite the fact I do not live there. This all beats having to go to work everyday and listening to an idiot boss. I worked from the time I was 16 years old - so it's time to enjoy my remaining years for the service performed. These bad ankles and wrist may hold me back a bit, but I'm still going to pursue fun and excitement!

At 62, I'd hardly call you a senior let alone call you elderly. Your son is quite the jokester I'd say.
I can't believe in three short years, I'll qualify for AARP membership!

Welcome to the great age and time-----They call us seniors for there are not many like us. Just imagine, we have finished the race and getting ready to start another and look at all the people that will NOT make it to this gracious level.
I am 65 going strong and enjoying life as it should be. working and enjoying it, but soon it will turn to the fishing and traveling, panning for gold, emerals or what ever and visiting the spots that I have missed.
Best of all enjoying the grand babies

I can undestand what you are saying..I took early retirement at 60 on "widows benefits" from my late husbands SS.....haven't regreted it one bit! after developeing bad knees from standing on concret floors as a cashier, falling and almost breaking a knee...I felt like why not when I found out I could draw more than i made working. I can now go at my own pace and take care of my knee. I am enjoying doing craft work again and am learning to make jewelry wich I design, reading more, watch movies on dvd and just plan old relaxing. I may have a little of that snow on my roof but still have fire in the furnace lol lol Magnolia

Not a thing wrong with retiring! Don't let the age thing get to you or what other people say. Go for it and kick up your heels!
I retired early at 48 and have enjoyed every minute of it. Why did I retire at 48? Because I could afford to do so due to smart money and career management, and don't have a man behind me for financial support.
