I'm in mourning, my friends. Today is a dark day over the Irish landscape...
...at least as Irish as the landscape gets in Dallas, Texas.
One of my favorite dining establishments has gone belly-up, nationwide. Of course, I'm talking about Bennigans.
As of today, most of the non-franchised locations of the Bennigans chain closed their doors, forever. It seems their parent company has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and ceased all operations. There was no notice to the loyal subjects like myself. No opportunity to slide up to the bar once more for a pint of Guinness and a lilting chorus of "Danny Boy".
The Celtic experience for millions of Americans has now slipped the ethereal plane and is forever no more.
I travel a lot, and I have been to a lot of great Irish pubs in Boston, New York and Chicago. The atmosphere was more authentic, as was the food, than at my beloved Bennigans. However, the waitresses at Bennigans were always ten-times hotter, they never ran out of Guinness and they had the one dining experience I have yet to find anywhere else.... The Turkey O'Toole Sandwich.
...and thus the reason I'm weeping like a little girl.
This...sandwich...this...heaven on a soft pretzel bun!! Warm turkey, melted Swiss cheese, honey mustard on this amazingly soft pretzel bread. It made fighting through interstate traffic worth it just to get a bite.
My friend. My love.
Now...gone.
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
..But don't eat it, God...that's MINE!!!
Kyle~
