In light of the recent blogs wondering how people could be so callous and apparently uncaring when happening upon the victim of some sort of violent occurence, i thought i might attempt to give some sort of explanation.
so you are walking down the street when you come upon what appears to be a seriously wounded man laying in the road,,,, now for some of you,,your first impulse is to see how you can help,,,,that's indeed a noble sentiment to be admired,,,,, and yet other's simply look and continue to drive and or walk right by barely acknowledging the fact that a fellow human being is obviously in need of help.
which brings us to the conundrum i will try and make clearer for everything is not as it may seem and although the more self-righteous amongst you will no doubt be unconvinced by anything i have to say,,,,harsh reality is sometimes not as happy happy joy joy as you delusively like to think.
so you lean down to help this person you don't even know and in doing so,,you get a minor scratch or scrape,,,,the man convulses violently and blood is sprayed on you,,perhaps in the wound you sustained or in your mouth,,,,
the man has aids,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
now you are going to contract the aids virus and there is a high probability that you may die as a result,,,,was it worth it? this is the reality we live in..i am not weighing in on either side of the issue,,just presenting hard facts,,this could happen,,it is not fantasy,,,like believing everything is flowers and sunshine,,,,it is the world we live in.
AIDS is now a pandemic In 2007, an estimated 33.2 million people lived with the disease worldwide, and it killed an estimated 2.1 million people, including 330,000 children.
how about this one,,,,,,,,,,you act the same in the situation i described above and because of your actions the man's life is saved as he certainly would have died if not for your intervention,,,,you have done a wonderful thing right?
a few months later the man is arrested for the rape and murder of a 10 year old child. now was it worth it?
i know you all want to think that by helping total strangers you are doing the right thing and in most cases i'm sure you are,,,,,,,but the scenario's i just described are a reality in the world we live in today and while they do not absolve those people who drive by without lending a hand,,,,,,i think even the most goodie two-shoes amongst you can see that perhaps,,,just perhaps,,,,,,discretion is indeed the better part of valor.....
perhaps,,,,,,,,you decide,,,,

I think your blog shows both sides...The sad thing is sometimes you never know who you are helping...that's the truth. You might be helping a good person, or a bad person.
...I'd never not help a child though...

ya that's what i was going for so thanks for getting it:) ,,,there are always two sides to everything,,,duality,,ying and yang,,good and evil....
as far as helping a child,,,,,,,,well,,,,,,,there is the old question....if you could go back in time and kill the baby hitler,,,would you? that's a mind-f#@ker ain't it?
what if the child you helped lives because of your actions,,,and ten years later,,,kills your child..............
this kind of stuff can really twist you up can't it? but it's reality,,,,,people are not all good,,,,i'm sorry but it's true,,,,,,hiding from it and believeing everything is hunkydory,,,is just not living in the real world,,,,, i wish it wasn't so,,,,i wish people were not capable of the horrible things that they do to each other,,,
but that's not the truth,,,and where do you draw the line and just protect yourself?
thanks for the comments fender,,,hope i didn't bum you out to much,,,but i have no problem dealing with the harsh reality of living in the modern world,,,,, the beauty of the world is only offset by the ugliness of it's inhabitants,,,,,
perhaps natural disasters are a divine way of evening out the score

Johnny, it's an intersting perspective and blog. My problem with the people you refer to that just walk by is; they won't even take time to stop and make a cell phone call. I can understand the concern of blood and disease but how could a human being, simply ignore another in pain, that was suffering? I'd like to think if it was me lying there, that someone would at least care enough to try and call for help.
What about the lady who died in the hospital lobby with nurses and medical professionals just walking around her? These people are trained and have protection against infection and yet no one even lifted a finger to check her pulse. I think people are simply becoming what I refer to as "tunnel minded." They see what's important to themselves and basically ignore anything else.
Congrats on writing a blog that makes people think. MD has been sort of short on that lately! UB

This poses a question that I think is age dependant. A younger person, with their life ahead of them, would probably walk on by and not take a chance of getting involved. An older person would be passionate enough to stop and help no matter what the consequences. At least that is the way I feel.

Very well thought out blog..
BUT......Because of who I am, and the way I was raised, I could not...in all concience, walk away without doing SOMETHING. Depending on the situation, at the very least would sit and talk to the victim...if they were choking on blood..roll them to the side...check for pulse, clear airways...SOMETHING...at the same time, protect myself.
But ignore it...never....
Good blog...

Whos to say what any of us would do.....working in healthcare.....i would have no choice but to help......ive always grown up thinking that no good deed goes unrewarded....and i still think that way.....when god put us here on this earth...he gave us each other to take care of....its just what i believe in.......cookie

I'm afraid that I'd probably suffer the consequences. I usually can't help myself, and as much as I don't like people sometimes, I'm usually right there when I see someone who obviously needs help. I even get in the middle of bloody fights although I know it's not in my best interest. I do see your point, but I'm too impulsive when it comes to that kinda thing.
