"Good bread doesn't last more than a day" I was with my daughter and son-in-law today. They put a bid on an old house near Hollywood Beach and the bank approved the loan. They are waiting to close this month. Although anything could happen, their plan is to do some serious renovation that involves moving interior partitions, adding a 2 car garage and changing the kitchen and 3 baths. I'm elected to be the project manager for them. So, today we were going over ideas and feasibility about moving walls and changing plumbing. We stopped for lunch. Actually, they went for food and I was measuring the room dimensions. They brought me a Philly cheese-steak on French bread from a small bakery nearby and it was the best bread I've had in months. My local bakery has a 'poor excuse' for French bread. Their version is chewy. The bread today was light and crisp. My son-in-law who came here from Italy about 3 years ago, grew up in a small town on the seacoast. All the grocery shopping was daily and the breads were baked fresh. His statement "Good bread doesn't last more than a day" holds true in my mind. Whether it's Italian or French bread... unlike American bread, baked for the masses, hand made bread is not the same on the second day.

oh, I love bread..... any kind of bread. It is my one big weakness. And it is so hard to find really good bread.
Maybe I should make my own.

In France and Italy they sell fresh bread on the street corners. You will see people carrying fresh bread around on buses and trains.
Your son in law is right. Good bread lasts one day and in my house had to be eaten.
Nice blog. Very nice

I have one of those bread makers that takes about 5 hours to pop out one tiny little loaf.. anyway you must take the bread out piping hot, slather it with butter and eat it that moment otherwise it will never be good
