It is not so clear these days, what it means to be an American- or, for that matter, what it takes. Gone are the familiar people, places and things. Of course this happens- but its more than that. Ive selected a couple of instances to share if I may. At first thought comes the love and loyalty to the land I was born in, the flag I was born under, with all that its supposed to represent. Then there's the feeling of being a part of something- something bigger than me, that at the same time belongs to me by inalienable right. Luckily for me, I know as a Native regardless of what goes on around me, or what ever happens to this land I call home, I will always be, no matter what I or anyone else does, an American. I am indigenous. The I look at history. Stranger takes my land Stranger gives my land to someone else Someone else loses my land. Would an American allow that to happen? I still hold my hand over my heart, although unlike before it is with a prayer that my America will always be herself, and belong to herself. And that those children will pledge an allegiance to put America first and embrace her culture,her structure and her rules, way before they concern themselves with taking from her bounty,
