Have you ever had someone say something to you that is just so far fetched that after you pick up your jaw you just have to look at them and smile 'cause there is nothing you can say and there's no point in being rude? I had that happen yesterday. If you can’t tell from my photo I’ve got blue eyes, pale skin and long blonde hair (the photo was taken at last year’s CA state fair).

Yesterday I was at the California State Fair giving a spinning demonstration during the Heritage Sheep Show & judging. People seemed to be very interested and there was often a big crowd watching. It was fun to show little kids especially, how fiber is spun into thread and plied to make yarn.

At one point in the afternoon a woman approached me to tell me it was just wonderful that “you Native American’s are keeping your traditions alive.”

I just had to keep that big laugh inside as I looked at her and smiled because she really was being nice. I just flipped my hair back and kept on spinning.

Have ya’ll had an experience like this? Please share if you have.

Some people try to situate my accent....
If they are annoying, I tell them that I'm from... Africa...

If you were born here, you are darn sure a native American.

You are a native of wherever you were born, and anyone from North, South, or Central America is an American.

Some presume to limit that to various Indian tribes, as some form of privilige, but most of us are native Americans. I guess the Indians capaitalize the word Native to denote thenselves. Hard to see that by ear.

I suspect there are more of you blond natives than all the Indian tribes put together.
