One of my favorite shows here on local tv in Las Vegas, is the City Council meeting, televised live on several mornings per week. In most towns, this is the worst show on the air, but not here in Sin City.
Today's meeting was a classic! The City denied business permits to a swingers club called "Sextasy". Las Vegas is America's capitol of swinging and mate swapping. These clubs are numerous and highly visable here, even more so than in Fort Lauderdale, where I moved here from.
The new owner had purchased an already existing swinging club from a previous owner, and applied for the appropriate licenses from the city, the same licenses the previous club had enjoyed for decades. Much to his surprize, he was targeted by code enforcement officials and his licenses were "lost" in red tape at City Hall.
You see, the previous club had been given an "A" by code enforcement repeatedly, even though the new owner discovered non functional exit signs and fire alarms, fire doors chained and padlocked, filthy conditions and a dead rat in the coke syrup. He improved the property and brought everything into compliance, only to be "failed" by the same inspector who had passed the other owner.
Hmmm... Not only that, but there are sex clubs on both sides of his establishment, both flagrantly defying City Codes and laws by allowing open sex and alcohol consumption, though the clubs are not allowed to distribute alcohol, and Las Vegas has no BYOB allowances. Patrons walk in the front door sporting cases of beer on their shoulders and bottles of hootch in brown paper bags. One of the adjoinong clubs bills itself nationwide as "The Largest Sex Club In The World".
The businessman's lawyer was an inept, incoherant, mess. Finally, he got up and accused the Council and The Business License Office, and all Inspectors of being corrupt, favoritists, on the take from the existing clubs shadowy, felon, owners.
He pointed out that a significant number of past Council members were currently residing in prison, for bribery and corruption charges. The same Councils which had crafted the laws surrounding the clubs, and made the licenses issuable at their "discretion". In other words..."you pay us off, we look the other way" laws.
He postulated that since he had not offered anyone a bribe, his application was being denied by the Council.
The City's District Attorney and the Council shot him down without blinking an eye, with the exception of one lady who, while still voting with the Council, asked to see his evidence against the adjoining clubs.
I don't attend sex clubs and certainly never plan to, but I was impressed by the eloquence of the owner, a non felon, who had been in business practice for 20 years, with no incidents or blemishes on his record. Of course, accusing the Council and it's cronies at City Hall, of corruption, on live tv, probably wasn't helping his case. He knew he was about to be crucified and wanted the truth to be heard by the shows viewers....all six of us.
This just underlines my previous statements, that this town is as crooked as it ever was. Faces and names may change, but the song remains the same. Corporate entities mask the true face of organized crime, but cash is still delivered in duffle bags and mail sacks to the power brokers and their flunkies on a daily basis, and the gravy train will never stop. The town is built on a mountain of dirty money and a river of blood, and that my friend will never change. It's a microcosm of America at large. f*** the little guy out of his cash...Pay the big boys off...screw anybody who doesn't get with the program in the ass, then laugh your way to the bank. And you think it's gonna change? Bend over and grab your ankles Pilgrim, and invest in some KY. You're gonna need it soon......
