Now I know some of you will give the "feel good" politically correct answers to this, such as love of family, acceptance, inner peace, etc, but I'm saying even those are secondary to, and dependant upon the needs I'm about to mention.
(1) Comfortable shoes. Without comfortable shoes you can't exist. Sore, chaffed and cracked feet are precursors to anger, bad spine alignment, and misery, in general. We all need shoes in North America, and what's more, we need comfortable shoes to exude a sense of well being and good overall attitude and health. Women who spend a major part of the day in uncomfortable heels, for instance, spend a disproportionate amount of time later in the day taking care of their abused feet. I'm not saying wear ratty old tennis shoes to work, or sandals to a formal event. Just use good sense and find a happy medium that works for you. Treat your feet the way you'd like to be treated. Which brings me to number two...
(2) Appropriate clothing. Of course we all need clothing. But even more important, it must be appropriate. Even the love of family and loved ones is not possible unless you know how to dress right. Only the most forgiving of loved ones will stick with you if you insist on going about dressed in a hefty bag, or the same old torn up jeans and stinky Tee shirts everywhere. Those shorts that show a major portion of your fat ass might look good to you, along with the bare midriff look, but if you have a budda belly, like it or not, you are coming off as a busted can of biscuts.
(3) Toiletries. Toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, toilet paper, shampoo. I hope I don't have to explain this to you. If I do, I can assume you haven't seen people in a while, and I urge you to turn yourself in to authorities as soon as you finish writing your manifesto....
(4) Money. Some sort of cash will be required to purchase the above. Or perhaps a bartering system where you trade services or animal hides, etc, for goods.
(5) A rudimentary education. Reading and writing are a must these days. Even if you get your money by robbing banks, you must be able to scrawl something on the hold up note. A series of grunts and childlike sign language might have once been suitable, but today's world requires a bit more skill.
(6) A phone. The internet you can live without. Also TV, radio, and a newspaper. But without a phone you are totally screwed in todays modern western world. No jobs, credit card companies or potential mates are willing to put up with anything less that total accessability these days. You might squeak by for a while, but eventually you must get a phone or find yourself with one foot virtually nailed to the floor.
(7) Tact. We can get by without tact, but those of us who don't know when to shut up, what not to say, or who not to insult, are most likely to have less friends and success than the guy who never buys toiletries, wears a hefty bag to church, and hangs out at the public phone booth, sparechanging, with bare, nasty, filthy feet.
Those are my big seven Most Important Things In Life. Now let's see how many folks have forgotten the first sentence of this blog and insist on feel good answers. It's not that I don't have compassion and a loving spirit, but I don't wanna be trapped in an elevator with you if you don't have any of the above.......
