I cannot believe it. The winds of a hurricane hitting our town clear up here in Dayton, OH. Today we had a cold front coming thru just as remains of hurricane Ike passed over us. TWO SYSTEMS MEETING UP! What a tremendous amount of wind we got!! We did not get any rain, but the winds have devastated this area. There are reports of 70mph winds here in our city and further south in Cincinnati they had hurricane strength!! As a result, our area is now without power - luckily mine was only out 4.5 hours. Some are going to be without power for a week, and we're dipping into the 40's at night this week. We're told to stay home, don't venture out due to wires down and debris everywhere. News said to NOT use candles either because the fire dept is having trouble getting thru the streets!!
I know the east coast of TX and the gulf area is much worse off than us, so I can only imagine what those people have endured. My prayers go out to them!
I have contacted my son, advised him I'm having a party at my house tomorrow. Yes, I plan to play "52 pick up". (I need all those branches, sticks, bark off trees, etc. cleaned from my yard, and it's one big mess!) My neighbor lost his one tree, one branch at a time it was stripped from the trunk. He carried branches to the street from his backyard for over an hour. The neighbors saw one elderly man with same problem, and pitched in to help him as well. This type of thing really brings neighbors together! Afterwards, we all sat around waiting for the power to come back on and chatted like a block party! (by that time wind had died down) When our lights came on, I was picking up debris in yard. I heard from all the homes - OHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAA - then a sigh of AWWWWW as the lights went back out. After a few minutes, the lights returned, and all were jumping up and down with joy. You could hear the shouts of joy in the street! We still do not have street lights, but at least we can see where we're going inside!
You just don't realize how much we take things for granted until we lose them. Here we all are stranded in our homes now. I'm sure those in TX area are much worse off than us, and I thank God we only had this touch of disaster in comparison to what they are enduring with the loss of their homes as well. Take a moment in your day to pray for those who are devastated in the Gulf!! As for myself, I'm praying for them as well as those who have no electricity around here, stranded in their homes, told to not leave yet. We really need our higher power in moments like these.

We got super-bad wind in Akron too, but very little rain this afternoon. It was kind of fun...except it managed to uproot a few of my sunflowers. (very sad) My power blinked on and off a couple times and I lost my internet for a few hours.

my niece is just outside cincy and she said that they got less rain but bad winds. they had electricity, but that 90 percent of cincy didn't.
here in west central arkansas, we got some wind, a bit of rain but not the bad stuff.
but, thanks to gustav and now ike, we no longer have any drought and no burn bans.
take care all, and be safe.

Cincinnati did get hit very hard, my power came on about an hr ago. I too could only remember the people that were hit the hardest from Ike & no matter how bad it is here, it was no comparison. My prayers were with them then & now that I have seen the devastation he has slightly caused us. Mother Nature will never stop amazing me as to how ferocious she can be. Today,,,,damage assesment & clean up.........My prayers to all that have suffered much worse than myself.

WOW..it's amazing to hear how many Ike has impacted. I"m not too far from the hardest hit areas and all we got was a little rain. My thoughts and prayers go out to ALL that were hit by this massive storm. Pam

We just got a little rain here in MD too.. not enough to help the farmers, I'm afraid. We haven't had a significant rain in months and its soooo hot and humid. Yesterday our heat index was 102 from the humidity. It was brutal!
