There's a lot more to Vegas than the Strip, with all it's glitz and neon. If ya want to see tourists in flip flops with their mouths agape, sure go on down there. If ya wanna see a good show, Donnie and Marie, Barry Manilow, or Cher, for instance, you go right ahead. But if it's "local color", cheap beer, cheaper women, and real funky lowlife, that you crave, then follow me. Ya see, I get my fill of the Casinos and the upscale martini joints, when I'm playin' with the band. But on my off nights, I wanna cavort with all my friends in "low places". F'rinstance...there's nothing lower than The Paradise Lounge on a Friday night. It's right there on MLK just west of the strip. Now anything that's on MLK (in any town)is usually not ya prime place for honkys and crackers on any night, but the Paradise welcomes everybody. The parking lot and the club are secured by very visable bouncers, and the beers are cheap. There's a blues open mic every Friday night, and unemployed or musicians on their "off" nights will show up there and have a ball. The crowd is a strange mix of local brothers from the hood, and R&B musicians from all over Vegas. I always have fun and end up meeting new people from all walks of life. On Sunday afternoon, I hit Shotz lounge for the blues jam there. once again, the beer flows cheaply and the music varies from week to week depending on who or what decides to drop in. It's a good place to hunker down and watch the game or the race. Later on Sunday, I end up at Mr. D's...a biker bar, where, once again, the jams are slammin' and the women outright slutty. Nudity, loud music, and Harley's are common occurances, and it's close enough to the house so I can have a few and still make it home without attracting "the man". But my favorite bar/dive, hands down, is the SandDollar. Monday night's open mic blues jam is a must attend. No rock assholes playing loud rock riffs over blues progressions here....just downhome Mississippi Mud style, smooth ass blues, crafted by Masters. The women are friendly and love to dance and gyrate, the drinks are reasonable, and I really feel at home here, more than even home...... Ya never know who's gonna drop in...Bonnie Rait...Jimmy Vaughn...Ted Nugent....Little Richard....this freekin' place is awright! There are some real scum holes I could mention, but I'm omitting any place that smells of urine. I prefer places where the beer is cold and the women are hot....but not a place where I'll be shot just for bein' me. So if ya wanna see the other side of Las Vegas, without gettin' killed, follow my advice and hit the above mentioned. As long as you aren't wearing sandals and black socks, pulled up to your knees, no one will know you're a tourist.....

Whe I lived i Vegas, one of my favoirtes was Ellis Island......karaoke at it's finest and some really talented regulars.
And then, tucked into a shopping center at Trop and Maryland was a tiny bar named "Sneakers". It is now closed and was a cigar bar last I heard, but I had some awesome times there.
