...the beach house, that is. I have spent several hours looking at links to NOAA on pictures of the storm damage on Bolivar Peninsula. There is nothing even resembling my house in the picture that matches my street configuration. I am so sad for all the people that lost property and entirely distressed over the people that stayed and perhaps died in the storm surge.
I can't believe that people would STAY when they say 10 or more feet of storm surge. Do you have any idea what storm surge is? Storm surge is where the fkn beach JUMPS it's crazy hurricane whipped ass out of its lil container and runs up the street to your house and yard and drowns every damn thing in the neighborhood.
At 7 feet of storm surge, the water is 16 inches deep in my yard in Crystal Beach...or what USED to be my yard in what USED to be Crystal Beach. Ok, my house WAS 6 ft 2 inches off the ground. So, say 7 ft of storm surge equals 16 inches of water. I am not talking just water either. I am talking water that is SHOVED at whatever speed the hurricane is moving at or close to it. The hurricane is THROWING that water at ya!
It knocked over heavy buckets of tools with the tiny surge that hit me years ago. Salt water kills power tools and electrical circuits, etc. It is not like you get something wet and can dry it out and it will work again. Forget it. It is trash. Salt inside corrodes. Now, just consider we have been told during Rita there was a possibility of 15-20 ft storm surge. MFG! Twenty minus 7 is 13 ft plus 16 inches...make it an even 14 ft. Well, that covers my house pretty well.
The FIRST opportunity I got to move, I did. Hello!!!!! I am not stupid! I was definitely ignorant about storm surge til who ever that was that bit us last time and then Rita scared the crap out of me. Yep, I LOVE CONROE! Just got the power back on tonight. Quite a little adventure.
Why, oh WHY did people stay? I cannot understand why people would stay. We dodged that bullet last time by a hair and you STAYED WHY? Because it was ROUGH being all stuck up with a bunch of other people? I was so pissed at a friend of mine that stayed in Galveston. By the way, salt water is JUST as bad for cars as it is for anything else. She and her girlfriend lost their cars.
I tried to get them to leave. This is all I can stand to share right now. I hope I can sleep. I feel sick. Below is a link of where my house used to be. On the left side of the picture is a street that makes a T between two other streets that go up and down. At the leg of the T near the first part of it on the right is where it used to be...the house that is.
It is weird, there is a red spot on the washed out picture and on this other picture below the after picture, you can see that red spot is a car near one of my neighbor's houses.

Spirit, sorry to hear about that mess. Just glad to know you are safe and sound away from it all. As you know, even though it hurts to lose property and items we treasure, those things can always be replaced...or most anyway. Better safe than sorry and very glad you're safe!

I'm so glad you were not there. And I'm sorry for your loss.
We have been working 24/7 with all the special needs evacuees. We have over 400 people in all forms of dissabilities, many bed ridden, and many amputees. I'm feeling sooo tired then I see a triple amputee roll by in their wheel chair. Then I feel bad. These people have to sleep on metal cotts, back to back with hundreds of people in the same room. We have lots of volunteers trying to make them as comfortable as possable. Many of them are in extreem pain. So, I put a smile on my face and try to comfort them if possiable. These poor people will probable have to stay in our building at least another week, maybe longer. Most of these people are alone. I've only seen a very small handful of family that come to see any of them.

Yeah, why did they stay, when they have people asking them to leave and I am sure you told her and others, that they could stay with you.
I wonder if they are told to evacuate and do NOT, does the insurance still cover their lost cars? I would think that would void the coverage? Don't know, do you?
I live an hour inland, not as the crow flies, but as the traffic goes, but still enough to be safe. If I were rich, I think I would have a home on the beach, but just a beach home without any valuables in it, so if I had to evacuate, not a worry about important papers and keepsakes.
When I lived on Anastasia Island, I left when they said go. Turned out we did not need to, but better to be safe than sorry.
Well, I am sorry for all that lost so very much. I know you are lucky, but so many were not and to be so foolish as to stay....... well. You said it all.

SE...I am so sorry about your house. As you say, mother nature is nothing to fool with. I've never understood people who refuse to evacuate in such situations. And it angers me when they don't evacuate, that mid-storm, they call to be rescued. Sorry...but I think they should be told...too bad..you've got to ride it out now.
I live probably less than 3 hours inland from the coast of NC. My family used to own a home at the beach. Every time there was a bad storm, everyone was worried. The house was finally sold...those worries are over now. I certainly do not mean to sound crass or as if your situation does not warrant sympathy, but at least next time now, you won't have to worry either.

I am not sorry for the beach house being gone. It was a real pain to deal with. I am sorry that I benefit when so many did not. That makes me sad. REAL sad. I am glad that I am no longer sitting there with a 'loaded gun' at my head anymore. That is definitely what it felt like after my first experience with storm surge and after they said 15-20 ft storm surge possibilities during Rita.

Sending hugs, positive thoughts. Wishing you some peace in your thoughts and heart, hon. I'm happy you're not harmed. Mother Nature must be going through her change the last couple of years. Incredible.
