Au Clair De La Lune can sound pretty depressing when learning to play the violin, I may as well have been playing ’Jingle Bells.’ I loved my little violin and it’s red lined leather case. I used to love sitting there running my fingers and my tongue up and down the horse hair bow.
My dad had a case too, a medical case containing his stethoscope, blood pressure instruments, thermometer, reflex hammer, a few thingy scopes and stuff, they were a lot more fun to play with than the violin.
We often played ‘Doctors & Nurses’ on the leather examination couch in the back room, where Dad held his private practice. It was great, a real clinical environment, just for us kids.
When my brothers weren’t around to play, my teddies became drastically sick and one day Pinky needed major surgery. I noticed that Hoppity had already had his appendix removed by one of the other surgeons, and from that little bit of medical training, I was able to remove Pinky’s appendix, squeaker and heart all in one. Probably the world’s first successful triple organ surgery.
I still have Pinky, she’s a bit older and tattier than me, I also have a small brown teddy with no name but his squeaker is fully in tact.
I’m not sure my own children ever played ‘Doctors & Nurses,’ their Nintendo and every thing else seem to be all in one piece. I don’t think they even had as much fun as we did, even though we didn’t have as much as they do today, we had so much more.
