I am embarrassed to say, that I have as yet to upgrade this house to have the smoke detectors hooked up to electricity. They still are battery operated and that is REALLY annoying when those batteries start to go out...... sheeh... the very most irritating, high pitched beeps..... YIKES!
I too, take the batteries out and sometimes forget to replace them for a day or two (yeah not a good habit). I really need to put pressure on someone to get one hooked up electrically........ you know, another on the honey do list that seems to get longer, not shorter.

Good advice and one I follow often...if in doubt, take the batteries out!

My daughter's hair straightener makes all these weird noises if it's plugged in even if it's not turned on. Took me FOREVER to figure out what the heck was making those noises!

My best "mystery beep" was a fortuitious godsend. Apparently the insurance inspector had left her moisture meter in a corner of my back room several years ago, when I had a flood in my house. (We'd looked everywhere and couldn't find this expensive piece of equipment)
One rainy night I heard beep-beep-beep coming from the back of the house. I had to move boxes and building materials to track down the source.
Water was leaking in along the foundation/floor line! And there was the moisture meter beeping away with it's warning.
And thanks to your blog, Maggie, you just reminded me that while I have a "handyman" in my employ (finally ), I need to have him install the flashing and sealer ASAP, before it rains again here in Nevada -- of course that's likely to be at least another month, lol.

My mother is a technophobe...I decided she needed smoke alarms in her house and she fought me on it ...saying she has lived for 80 years without those dang ugly things on her ceiling. I put them in anyway. Several months later she called saying she had ripped them out. She heard this chirping noise and had called animal control to check the attic and had a bill for their services to change the battery on the smoke alarm.
