It’s a bit surreal to be driving away from Arkansas after living here for so many years.
I got a good sendoff from my friends on the kickball team. We had a doubleheader last Sunday. It was great playing and watching them play this last time. One exceptionally big guy on the other team we called “Andrea the Giant”. He covered first-base. Our guy “Hollywood” bunted and headed for firsts-base. Rather than over-running first, cutting to the right and returning to first, Hollywood wrapped around behind Andrea the Giant and headed for second-base. Andrea the Giant was not happy but our team enjoyed the moment.
I played reasonably well catching a pop-fly and running the ball back in from my position in leftfield to hold the runners after they tagged-up. In another play I fielded the ball and charged to the infield to return the ball to our pitcher thinking the best I could do was stop the play so that no more runners could advance. While charging in I saw their runner slip and fall between third and home-plate. As one of my teammate’s said “there was blood in the water”. I turned on the speed and charged in behind him as he got up to run home. Before he could cross the plate I was able to catch-up to him and bounce the ball off his back to get him out.
We lost that game but we played well. The second game of the doubleheader was on the field near the where the “laid-back league” plays. These people are more into costumes and theater than winning. It was like a zoo or was it a circus? I said to Chris, she said more like a menagerie. The fields were still very muddy after the heavy rains from hurricane Ike. We play on the grass in the outfield our first game. Not so for the laid-back league they had no intentions of missing a mud game. Pictures are available online at flickr, use keywords “Little Rock Kickball (Pool)” in google.
I will miss those Sundays playing Kickball in Little Rock with my friends.
The movers are coming soon. When they are gone I will clean house and drive to my new city to start a new position. This new job is the result of my recent graduate. I am no longer a professional student I got a “real job”.
I am very excited to begin living in New England and working in the lab. They have good funding and new equipment for their research.
My new town has kickball too.
Cheers, The-LawnMower-Man
