a note on perfectionism.

The fact that I am a Virgo makes it rather clear than I am somewhat of a perfectionist. I say “somewhat” as having four kids and teaching required I learn to “go with the flow” for the most part. However in the “real workforce" – you know the competitive world – where there is a product or service to SELL – I want things DONE RIGHT, I want to be THE BEST, OFFER THE BEST & WORK WITH THE BEST ! Make no mistake about it!!

Well, I got laid off (company downsized & I was making too much $$$). Without sharing my complete tale of woe, I will merely say my next position came in the form of a non-profit government agency. Most of you know there is a great deal of difference in both work ethic and pay scale between the two arenas. Still – I was able to exert my sense of high level expectations, bring up the level of work ethic and be appreciated in my new position.

Then, as many of you know, I went through some health challenges which caused me to be off work for quite some time and have just recently returned to work on a part time basis.

Oh woe is me! Classes are being taught by people who are not qualified. Work is going out the door full of errors. Clients are being cared for once personal business is taken care of. Boy is it hard to just sit back and watch, but I ain't in charge and I'm only there a few hours a day. Don't get me wrong, I still speak my piece, but with my not being there on a full time basis, it makes little difference.

There comes a time and a place when one must “Let Go of Ego.” I've never considered myself an egotistical person. I just want things done right. I am also used to being in a position where I am in charge of making sure things are done right. I now find myself in a position where I cannot make a significant change. At this time, stress is the last thing I need for my health and well being. I am now in a position where I need to “... accept the things I cannot change.” Such an interesting lesson for me in the work place. It's just not my style, but isn't there a song... “It don't matter to me...” ? I just may have to adopt it for a while.

I am perfectionist as well crackerjackpat, after all I am the flip side of the virgo being a pisces. It is hard when wanting every perfect. I just had to learn to let it go and do my best and leave the rest in someone else's hands.

I know just what you mean. I feel people just *dont care* any longer. I have noticed it seems to be happening everyone.......this 'couldnt care less' attitude. It seems to be in stores......nursing homes......justabout everywhere. People dont seem to want to pay for skilled workers........only in some avenues of the work place........but not as many as in previous years. I even notice it when I go to my Target Department store near where I live. Many years ago there were tons of girls floating round to help customers. Now when you go there.....you cant get any service at all......and if you are lucky enough to get someone.......they dont know one thing about the Product.........or if they will be getting any more of a certain line in. In fact.......they dont know anything full stop. I always have to ask.......*Is there anyone who CAN help me*........and they reply *not really*......and it seems to be the same everywhere. It seems to be a *help yourself* socieity....*but dont ask us anything about the products....because we just dont know*.
Even in nursing homes.....you get people dishing out medication that are not qualified. You get Directors of nursing homes......that dont want to take responsibity. You get people who are alcaholics dishing out medication........and all sorts of social problems.......and these people are neglectful .......or make errors in all sorts of ways. And no one seems to care........only the families of the people hurt........and they have to fight to get details or any sort of satisfaction.

I am a virgo also.........and those things effect me deeply. We like to be efficeint.........and cant come to terms with neglect of poor attitudes......or people who dont want to accept responsibility for things they have control over.
I think this is the modern age we are coming into. All the good stuff we once knew.......seems to be falling by the wayside....more and more every day. Instead of the world being a better place........it seems to be sliding downwards. This is how it seems to me.

I'm like that at work too.. having been sick with upper respiratory for 2 months, I didn't do my usual stuff... and neither did anyone else!! It was filthy! (By my standards anyway)

Yesterday I got down on the floor and cleaned under the oven. EWWW it was nasty down there. I don't think anyone but me ever looks there. They sweep and mop but they don't move the tables where the food prep is done so anything that might have spilled over during the day is still against the wall between table and wall. I scrubbed the walls in the kitchen, prep area and deli because of flecks of coffee, soup, whatever on them. Nobody pulled out the blade on the can opener and wiped it. It makes me nuts!

They say all my frantic cleaning makes them feel I think nobody else is doing any work... well, DUH! If they were doing it I wouldn't be having to do it, now would I? LOL

I understand what you're saying. There are so many things in my job that irritate me. Yes they effect me in that I see people like myself who have a super good work ethic are not appreciated as much as someone who doesn't. I see it but I also know I can't change the people who are so shallow. So I work at taking care of me now. I still always strive to do the right thing because when I lay down at night its more about how I feel about me. Just stay true to yourself lady!

I've dealt with that same perfectionism in my life as well, Pat.
But somewhere along the way I did learn (to some degree) to accept the things I could not change....I think it was while working in corporate American, as a matter of fact. And now, my mom & I live together...and we don't see eye to eye on how everything is around the house....but I'm dealing with it. And life goes on.

Hmmm, not able to give your best? Nor able to make any significant differences? Let's see if something can be done about that, Pat, my love.

CrackerJack, how I can relate, I am a Virgo also and things have to be in their place and in order. I don't like people in my cupboards or showing up unannounced. My days are planned. Everything is done right the first time, I don't like repeating myself. It is irritating when people don't listen when you try to teach them something as you are very thorough. It can be a curse like the other blogger says, but you also get somewhere in life as you have ambitions and strive for promotions. Usually climb the ladder to success easily, so there are pluses too. You have a great memory so your family thinks you have built in gps even though they'd wish you'd forget some things they've done lol. You have to take the good with the bad. Take care Lost
